I've tried to make my own pair of shoes a few times now, never quite getting to the end. I even took a class but doing it on my own is so much harder. I'm a software developer with no real reason to be sewing and lasting my own sh

Designers gonna design. Even when a UI is perfectly fine, huge design teams have to justify their existence and therefore change everything for no real reason. I guess it makes more work for developers, though the utility of the work is que

I do full stack stuff at my job but front end is my favorite thing to work on, particularly if it's an interesting UX. I think a good understanding of design is also something people don't get about front end. Limited designs from

It can't be a Hacker News thread without at least one mention of LLMs, even if the thread is completely unrelated.

Code runs or it doesn't... but that doesn't mean it does what you want it to do. An LLM could generate code that takes raw user input and adds it to a raw SQL query. Does it work? Yeah. Is it a terrible security flaw? Also yeah. A

Yes, which is why it's slightly confusing why programming is being pushed so hard to use with LLMs. For things that don't need completely accurate information, sure. But for programming, data, and factual information, it's su

Here's a random, crazy idea: What if instead of streaming JSON, we streamed CSV line by line? That'd theoretically make it way easier to figure out what byte to stream from and then parse the CSV data into something usable... like

You can always compile your front end code from Typescript to Javascript with something like esbuild.

AI is good for people who have given up, who don't give a shit about anything anymore. You know, those who don't care about learning and solving problems, gaining real experience they can use to solve problems even faster in the f

I'd like to think the point of technology is to do the same thing but faster. AI tools can do things faster, but at lower quality. They can't do the _same_ thing faster. So AI is fine for specifically low quality, simple things. B

In practice most UIs don't have crazy image based animations and can be done with CSS. Lotties might be good for the one off animated GIF style animations, but in that case why not just use the many tools to create SVG animations? Many

When you rephrase it to "Make your own wheel" it sounds a lot more empowering. Many of my side projects are just my own version of things that are specifically tailored to my preferences. I have a notes web app that backs up to S3

Pretty cool. I'm wondering how large of a CSV you could feasibly load with this. I always have to manually open CSVs in text editors if they're too large for Excel, so if this is a better UI for it that can handle large files I wi

LLMs are pretty similar in concept to site builders. They can do the basics reasonably well but if you want anything custom they show their weaknesses. I have been building a gallery for my site with custom zoom/panning UX to be exactl

I think it would be faster/easier to use a website builder or various templating libraries to build a quick UI rather than having to babysit an LLM with prompts over and over again.

Realistically it's way easier to just build a mini PC or get a $600 gaming laptop if you want to play games and also use MacOS. This is good for tinkering but at the end of the day you want to have a good experience... rather than endl
