The commenters in this thread don't seem to understand what it's like to be a new programmer, especially when you may not have had a burgeoning passion for computers your whole life. I too am a huge vim user but I would never reco

I talked to my department head about this before I graduated and the answer was basically that new programmers have enough to worry about already and, frankly, she didn't want to have to answer constant emails about how to do or undo t

Mostly it's meant as a reminder to anyone reading the parent comment to think critically instead of just taking the claims at face value, as I often tend to forget to do that myself.

These points are laid out as if they're clearly true but I'm not sure that's the case. It reduces people to rational actors and assumes they're all optimizing for certain conditions but both of those assumptions are clea

I'll take the middle ground and say I think it's more of a vicious cycle. Grow up in a dysfunctional environment and develop a bad concept of other people and of masculinity and it becomes harder and harder to break out of that as

Yeah I can see how that makes sense. All I can say is the old cliche "autism is a spectrum" line. Some of us are better at evaluating emotional states than others and it definitely requires some degree of self awareness that not e

Can you explain your reasoning for this? I've found that neurotypical people are pretty bad at identifying autistic people who are masking (that is after all the point of masking) whereas it's relatively easy for me to recognize i

This is anecdotal but I strongly disagree with "likely a deeper connection." I really do think girls are just severely under diagnosed. I have several adult women and AFAB friends who all display autistic traits and, to me (an aut

I'd wager a guess that getting players will be the most difficult part by far, at least in the beginning. Make an MVP and focus on building a playerbase first, then come back to architecture when you're suffering from success if y

Must be nice being able to work in the same shell every day, and one you have complete control over no less. For those of us ssh-ing into uncountable remote servers all day with unprivileged accounts, it's not really a practical option

I think about this pretty often from the opposite perspective. As a frequent user of software, I can't get over how much it all sucks. Nearly every nontrivial piece of software I've ever used has had annoying and frustrating bugs

I used to eat shredded wheat with extra bran every day just to maintain a high fiber intake. Then the price of milk got too high to justify it so now I eat instant oatmeal made with water. Gets the job done well enough.
