You’d have to impersonate Google’s web servers to push the update, wouldn’t you? That would mean both hijacking the DNS and faking or stealing the TLS cert. That’s not impossible, but it’s pretty much a moderately-well-equipped-nation level

I don’t think that’s a great argument. Just because a company is large doesn’t mean they’re ethically in the wrong on every possible accusation.

Before iOS (and for the early years of iOS) people paid out of pocket for software updates. Now it’s an ongoing cost instead, imposed as a tax on software transactions. This is not an unusual arrangement - people rent things in perpetuity a

Apple’s non-hardware expenses aren’t limited to the distribution platform… They make the OS, the libraries, the APIs, the development tools and continue to maintain those even after the hardware is sold… Why should third parties get to free

There are lots of enterprise tech stacks where you have a single (or single-as-possible) centralized secret store… it’s far from uncommon, I.e., Hashicorp Vault, AWS Secrets Manager, Google Cloud KMS.

LinkedIn does have a jobs platform. I’m not an HR person, but the bits of it I used were pretty good. I liked the AI bit that auto-filtered-out people with nothing at all relevant on their resumes (which was pretty accurate from my spot che

While I somewhat agree, in my experience in practice the “just run it locally” approach results in software I need to use a clumsy and slow VPN to access, runs on servers that are either wildly over or underpowered, is constantly going down

Yeah, as a Figma and Adobe consumer this feels like an intentional effort to limit my choice and enable Adobe creative cloud to continue to be more-or-less the only realistic option for design work. I’m perennially frustrated that I live in

Yeah, over the last five years illustrator has added no useful new features (at least for my use cases) and XD has wandered around with no clear direction. Meanwhile Figma has been a rocketship of features that massively improve workflows.

Cross-site caching doesn’t exist in any modern browser (IIRC each site gets it’s own separate cache) because it enables all sorts of tracking and leaks browsing history.

Is that actually the test? That still sounds like it would make every third-party CDN (Cloudflare, Akami, etc) illegal - a CDN isn’t “necessary” and logs IP addresses all over the place. I can’t help but feel that the situation is much more

That’s an interesting hypothesis. I could see how paper mail, by virtue of forcing you to put extreme effort into clarity and thoroughness, could spark some novel thinking. On the other hand, as much as I think I work with great people, I d

For anybody not familiar, WebFaction was “shared hosting for nerds”. The control panel gave you a lot more power than most shared hosts did, you had SSH access, and you could spin up servers for pretty much every web programming environment
