I think there is a national security aspect to ML models trained on copyrighted data. Countries that allow it will gain a superior technological advantage and outcompete those who disallow training on copyrighted material. I personally beli

I just tried the game. Let me preface this comment by saying that I think any exploration of new game techniques is always worthwhile, and, more broadly, creating anything is always positive. I have no expectation that the author of this ga

The author decries this phenomenon as a bad thing, and indeed it is from a sustainability perspective, but, as someone who owns a very old fridge, I have a slightly different perspective. Does my fridge work? Yes. Would I replace it if I co

I fail to see how the conclusion of your scenario is monopoly power. If anything, it seems like it would create a marketplace with more players because secret knowledge is no longer a barrier to entry.

You're allowed to voluntarily sacrifice your rights in private contracts. E.g. an NDA limits your the 1st amendment rights, but it's not unconstitutional to agree to one.

It's important if you're hiring someone to do something important and you want to verify the owners haven't been named in any other lawsuits, don't have a conflict of interest, etc.

Your “experience” (bias?) is easily falsified. Obviously memory issues happen all the time in unsafe languages, but even then, not nearly at the frequency that a novice Rust user will conflict with the borrow checker. The article we’re co

Why have parameters at all if they're not meant to be used? I don't really buy the argument that you're allowed to use parameters for small things but not for large things. Personally, I prefer if sites give me a local-only o

Did you actually look at that list? Most have under 1,000,000 in population. Many even have less than 100,000. There are only a handful of cities on the list comparable to NYC. It’s also worth noting that Manhattan would be 9 on the list, i

This would make sense if the population growth was increasing but at a slower rate. But, the population is actively declining. Somehow, 5.3% of people went from having housing to leaving, so I don’t think housing is the only story here.

We (as a society) consider addicts personally responsible for their actions. For instance, if an alcoholic drives drunk and kills someone, we don't say "oh they're an alcoholic and therefore not responsible for what happened.

Another totally plausible explanation is that CPI massively underreports inflation. Productivity is inflation adjusted. If you have 10% inflation but report it as 5%, then it will appear that you’ve gained 5% productivity when you haven’t.
