Markdown as I see it is for those who are trying to emphasise the text over style, which especially means writers. What it doesn't mean is random webforums where every second post has a rainbow of colours, boldings and so forth.

A while back I wanted to put a JSON information string and a fairly sizable 3D model in the same request response, and then pull the JSON off without nailing the browser if the model was big. I keep meaning to test how well it works in diff

Realistically, you can't worry about it. There's patents on almost anything you might try to do in software, and especially as a small company all you can try to do is avoid any ones you know are being actively trolled.

There's a great deal of the population who spend their lives working in shops and so forth doing relatively menial work. Why they're doing it is not about intelligence at all, it's all about drive. A driven person who's terrified of Maths a

You sum up exactly why I've long since not cared about WordPress, but you seem to assume anything dynamic has to have an admin interface. The ideal engine for me still uses flat files for content, but doesn't compile the files to HTML. Let

As everyone has, I built my own static site generator called Fairytale ( https://github.com/46Bit/fairytale ). Unlike a lot of them, it wasn't intended as a simple magic-incantation tool: I reimplemented the relevant parts of Sinatra for st

There is something of a talent pool in recommendations between the YC startups. Get involved with one, and you'll probably be able to get more work out of it if you do a good enough job for them to remember it.

I think Carr is very uncomfortable with where services like Uber are taking us. Specifically the notion that we're headed for a world with a much starker rich/poor divide, due to power becoming more concentrated in the hands of companies li

That's actually really clever, I love it, especially the colour changing. It might be a good idea to display a hint to resize the browser to the displayed resolution on the first play, since Hackers tend not to read instructions.

As someone who interned at a YC S12 this summer, this is spot on. Patrick's summed it up, really: you can find an awesome company where you finish up not believing how much you learnt in 3 months. I did! Just think carefully about what you'

I've heard surprisingly low, especially for roles that aren't a simple "frontend engineer at [real-]profitable startup with 20 staff." I think much of the reason is that (especially these last few months) the job board has rarely had fewer

I feel it's important to emphasise this: we have nothing to suggest whether it was because the software team was forced to ship early, because Forstall didn't agree it was so far behind Maps, or other disagreements. Don't blame Forstall for

Or rather just a different framework. I wasn't a Rubyist in 2007, but certainly now Sinatra (especially with Padrino) is worthy of consideration.

I wrote an essay about the requirement for energy storage last month ( https://46bit.com/blog/2012/09/23/why-we-use-fossil-fuels/ ). It's interesting to see how interconnected countries struggle without it now, although that's not quite the

I wouldn't call that a good thing. You generally can't turn off/on a coal plant in a hurry. What they're probably doing is just braking the turbines and still burning some fuel. (Edited, realised it sounded confrontational to begin with.)

Getting over 5GB on one SIM card at decent speeds seems to be almost impossible. Having rung around a lot on this, most UK networks say they'll only do it for video advertising boards next to motorways and such.
