As long as developers are graded on their ability to crank out features most will continue to not care about reliability, alerting, etc., and there will be a need for dev ops/sre/etc.

I'd like to say that I appreciate this comment even though I disagree. It's true that you can be a perfectly good or even above average developer without ever using BFS, and interviewers shouldn't pretend this is not so. It&#

This reminds me about a recent Freakonomics podcast about Trader Joe's. It starts off by asking, what would you think about a grocery store with no name brands, much fewer options, no sales on items, not loyalty program, no automated c

I still think it's a trap that a lot of smart people fall into. I know a lot of really smart people who try to beat the stock market.

Trying to beat the stock market, when it's incredibly difficult. Even actively managed mutual funds fail to consistently beat the market average.

Do you have a problem with political ads on tv? From my perspective we should have campaign finance laws that regulate political ad spending, but there's nothing inherently wrong with showing political ads on tv, facebook, or elsewhere

You're way overstating how often PhD's switch over to industry. You make it sound like it's 100% when it's definitely not. Also, it's perfectly reasonable for a tech company that wants state-of-the-art, cutting-edge
