Actually, thinking about this, I'd assumed the drones must be autonomous or controlled via cellular networks, to make them harder to trace or jam. But now I'm thinking they're being controlled via more standard remote frequen

I can understand they're wary of flying any manned aircraft near them to take them out, but I can't understand why they haven't yet deployed a fleet of suicide drones to knock them out of the sky? Is there something we'r

This article made me slightly sad that my kids might one day find my various gadgets among all the junk in the garage and not be able to figure them out, but equally not want to throw them out for sentimental reasons. I need to either put p

With all due respect, one single article ranking #1 in Google hardly constitutes proof , or turns the argument into a myth. I am genuinely interested in the answer to this though. The idea that the article has to be longer/more detail

Interesting. I know 500 was the standard. But my understanding is that the big Google updates (Panda et al) put paid to that model in favour of the "authority site" model, hence you're supposed to rank better for longer con

Sub-pixel rendering was often used on low-res monitors as a way of achieving smooth fonts. The idea was to anti-alias the edges of the glyphs by filling in individual R, G or B pixels to give a smoother edge, hence the font was more detaile

Yes, I agree, and I'd go so far as to saying burning it is in one way better than it ending up in the sea, but clearly very bad in another sense. Just another example of how different facets of the "environmental" argument ca

@kgwgk Exactly, every single one of them survived until they could reproduce, which is no mean feat given the sheer number of individuals involved.

I'm all for capitalism. But punitive taxation can be used very effectively to reign in unbridled capitalism. Taxing plastic production, and properly rewarding recycling or reuse schemes would be have a pretty big impact to the bottom

The "bottle" part is pretty bad. I heard somewhere a water bottle will last 400 years. I don't know for certain that that's true, but if it is, I can only wonder just who thought it would make an ideal container for some

Sure, I know there are entire continents where the water is unsafe to drink; my point is about the developed world where we largely solved the problem and then unsolved it again. Your point about removing drinking fountains is a case in poi

I just wonder how our ancestors did it. Not only did they survive without plastic bottles, but they even survived the last 99.99% of biological history without plumbing ! I drives me mad. We solved the problem over a century ago. The ancie

Yeah, that's what always confused me about it when I worked on GSM phones back in the mid-2000s - if you're going to overload an old protocol so heavily, it's time for a new one.

AT commands are still in use inside your smartphone. On an iPhone, when the main CPU wants communicate with the baseband chip to make a call or send SMS or whatever, it literally sends AT commands. In fact, one of the earliest iPhone jailbr

4dB is the default setting for the built in audio set to 100%. And yes it sounds quite horrible, but the internal audio does in general. When you add a DAC that is fixed and it changes to the correct setting of 0dB.

Nice idea. My amp is Cambridge Audio but it sadly does not have a DAC. If it had, the setup would have been even simpler than it is.

Absolutely. I'm the article author and yes, adding a DAC is definitely recommended because the output from the audio jack is terrible. I'm intending to do a follow-up article on this, but so far I've tried IQAudIO Pi-DAC+ wit
