I think Ben Evans is a lot more optimistic than I am about about how feasible to train good models from data. By the time you have considered all the caveats, the number of candidates for applying ML greatly decreases.

I completely agree with this. I subscribe to the Gary Marcus' view that what we need is the marriage of symbolic AI and ML.

This will only happen as long as investors are willing to throw money at fracking without expecting returns. The economics of the fracking industry are dubious at best. See for example: http://knowledge.wharton.upenn.edu/ar

I really haven't seen much difference. I'm the designated shopper in my family and I usually shop my local Whole Foods for a few items every week. Despite having my Prime bar code scanned from my phone, I have never once received

Absolutely agree - Unix was ubiquitous in academia by 1986. I myself learned C on a VAX running BSD 4.2 in 1986.

These are all good but what I really like are some of the quirky Netflix-only series like "A Very Secret Service", a French comedy that would have been very hard to discover or watch in the old days

I agree with your assessment. GE was a conglomerate and as such the various businesses in its control operated on different cycles.

No matter how much money I acquire, it will not help me to understand a mathematical theorem or become a master craftsman. Real wealth is what's inside you.

This brings back happy memories for me. In the late 80s, I wrote thousands of lines of Occam for a Meiko Computing Surface made from Inmos T800 Transputers. Among the parallel algorithms I implemented was Lamport's algorithm for findin

This is really remarkable "you can audit and modify any portion of the open source firmware on the Blackbird™ mainboard, all the way down to the CPU microcode."

It's not as hard you might think. Other messaging services like Telegram and Signal also use phone numbers as the identifiers so it would be relatively easy to switch.

I agree - replicating WhatsApp will not be hard. In any case, Signal and Telegram are waiting in the wings.

A related question: if China builds battery factories, surely they would also build car factories to use those batteries. What would be the impact on Western car manufacturers? Would software increasingly become the key differentiator betwe

I really like this. I want to have an honest relationship with a service provider. I pay them for their service and they don't steal my data or reuse it in any way.

Half serious suggestion: Could we somehow enable individuals themselves conduct auctions to allow advertisers to access? Imagine being able to say: "I will accept 10 ads today - you guys figure out what you want to show me".

The craft beer market is simply oversupplied. In any of the larger liquor stores in the US, there is a bewildering choice of beers, most of which are simply undistinguishable.

I'm spending more time than ever listening to podcasts, most of which are monetized either by advertisements, subscription or Patreon. Podcasting appears to be a medium that actually benefits the smaller players over the bigger ones.

Even in the late 90s, source code revision control was a dark art: either you used extremely expensive proprietary systems or else you used CVS which was very low level and completely lacked integration with any bug tracking system. Merging

Why not rebuild railroads here in the US? On a trans-country trip by Amtrak, I was struck by the number of abandoned spurs to industries which still seem to be operating. Presumably those industries have switched to road-based transportatio
