That's the first thing that came to mind as well, and Stack Overflow definitely operates at scale, but OP asked for people doing distributed systems. SO is famously monolithic, famously operating from just a handful of machines.

I'm also really skeptical that one could maintain 1K/lines per day for more than a couple weeks if that. There have been a lot of studies that measure average output of new code at only ~15 or so LOC/day. One can manage more

Hi Richard, This is neat work. Regarding the extension requirement, you state that you believe that it's impossible to compete without the convenience of navbar search, aka against Google/Chrome. You may be right, but this threa

I strongly second not gating the service. Honestly, I laughed and closed the tab when I saw that I had to install an extension. Furthermore, literally drawing a search-box and then having it not actually perform a search is a dark-pattern.

I don't understand what exactly this rename/rebrand entails. Is it restructuring FB like Google became Alphabet? So, under the "Meta" umbrella, you have all of the individual FB assets, and www.facebook.com just becomes

A better estimate of fully loaded cost is $350K. That's still a boatload of people if you take your simple estimate, but companies don't spend 100% of revenue on people. Mozilla foundation has about 650 people which gives it a re

What's your definition of long term? mRNA vaccines are built on science started 30 years ago, are being made by companies founded to make mRNA vaccines 10+ years ago, and have been to numerous trials for many years now. The current se

I had the same issue on my screens in that the body font size was too small to read comfortably. I tried a few different CSS modifications, but it seems like that particular font just doesn't perform well on a wide variety of screens.

As others here have pointed out, the goal shouldn't be to replace radiologists, but to enhance their capabilities. That is to say, pair human judgement with AI. It may not be as good as two humans making a judgement call, but it'

IIRC, the early consensus wasn't that they were useless, it's that there was no RCT that said they were effective. That's a big difference. Our understanding now is different. If this was Sen. Paul's only statement--th

Sure, it's a valid area of discussion. There are valid ways to critique the effectiveness of masks. To say, however, that: "Most of the masks you get over the counter don’t work. That's because the virus particles can go ri

It's great to see that I'm not the only one with this opinion. As an engineer who consumed design work from figma, I hate it. * Slow is an understatement. And huge. Like 100Mb to start working on a medium size design (~20 frames?

I'm highly skeptical of the lower ranges. Typically, a professional bass has a range down to around C2, and can hit a loud E2. There are some exceptionally low voices, especially in Russian choirs[1] that routinely hit B1s, maybe ev
