Traveling really makes you realize how completely lame US currency is. 2010 is the 100th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution, and they have put out some sweet (plastic) notes to commemorate it: http://www.flickr.com/photos/lukefrancl/427

"I describe what it really did for me, which LED to the creative freedom." That is, selection bias. I think you're understating the amount of work it took you to get to the point where you could launch Twistori and have it be a success. You

Shipping is awesome, and if you don't ship you've got nothing. But to think your first product/site/whatever is going to give you creative freedom...I think that's selection bias. I've shipped a lot of mini-sites (mostly for my own amusemen

The point of the article is more that an entire generation is going to be scarred by this recession. The author cites research showing that people who enter the workforce during a recession never catch up the lost wages. They always lag beh

I read about 40 books a year[1]. The main way I do this is not alienating my friends but by not watching TV. I have started watching DVDs and Netflix instant stream recently and this has cut into my reading time. I do recommend requesting b

My wife and I figured out today that the next time her birthday will be on a Friday, she'll be 42 years old. Yikes! But it did give me an idea this simple website and a chance to screw around with date.js ( http://www.datejs.com/ ) and CSS3

Business people are also too often convinced of the genius of their own ideas, when in reality ideas are practically worthless.

The SO podcast is one of the few I occasionally listen to but it suffers from the same problem that nearly every podcast does: it is extremely boring to listen to people ramble on for an hour. IMHO, podcasts as they exist today need to be m

I'm confused. Are you suggesting that Joel has long since jumped the shark, or that he has not come close to reaching his full potential? The shark jumping incident I am referring to occurred in 2006 so it's not like this is a recent idea.

Joel has mentioned a couple times in the past -- I think this started around the time people like Jeff Atwood said he jumped the shark -- (the Wasabi incident; sorry, I'd never be able to find links from Joel on this) that he's written abou

Sure, that makes sense. That's not what I'm saying about anomie though. Do you want to live in a world where your strongly held beliefs are dominant (not exclusive, but dominant) or in one where you are in the minority? Haidt is saying a pe

I've been writing down some notes for advice for applicants but Tony's article covers everything I would have said and then some. Great job! If you're applying or thinking of applying, take what he says to heart.

First off, I doubt you would say that about anything you feel very strongly about, otherwise what is the point of holding that belief? To expand a little bit, Haidt argues that too much moral diversity leads to anomie, in which the conditio

You'll come across this if you read any book on happiness. From a quick search ("experiences happiness") the first result is a CNN article about this: http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/02/10/happiness.possessions/i...

Actually, research shows that unlike buying stuff, experiences like vacations lead to happiness that does not diminish over time. You're not just trading $1000 and a week to get stuff done, but also a lifetime of happy memories.

I just finished reading "The Happiness Hypothesis" by Jonathan Haidt which has an interesting discussion of what "diversity" means and this post reminded me of that. Haidt argues there's two kinds of diversity: demographic and moral. People

I think the land grab is for Q&A that doesn't suck. Yahoo Answers is a punchline and Experts Exchange sucks and has already been eclipsed by Stack Overflow (that was SO's raison d'être).

The point is that 37signals explicitly claims not to be a startup. Their line is that they're a profitable 10 year old company. I once asked DHH in a Q&A his opinion on working on a startup outside of Silicon Valley. He corrected me.

You can get around this some of the time with hg pull; hg up (instead of hg fetch). This works as long as you don't have a conflict. If you have a conflict you have to check in and merge at that point. I do agree that git stash is superior
