Do people really buy source code? I would think raw source code is of limited utility. A lot of the value is in the heads of the people who wrote it. If you sell source code do you have to include some amount of training/consulting to hand

I think the open source stack alternative is getting a bad rap here mostly because of MySQL, which has historically not scaled well on multi-CPU systems. C# is certainly faster than a Python or Ruby but you pay a price in development speed

For a minute, I thought CodeCon was coming back. Darn! That was a cool conference. I somehow managed to scam my way into speaking at the first one -- I was the least smart person there by far! http://www.codecon.org/2009/

I do that too. Double clicking on web page text is sort of a nervous tick for me. On sites like the New York Times (and now TechStars, apparently) odd things happen when you highlight.

This is pretty much the idea behind congestion charges (for example in London). New York City tried to institute them, but the State Assembly stopped them (basically suburban interests trumped city interests). It would have made a big diffe

Interesting idea, but already the reason we are so concerned about government debt when inflation is so low and the economy is so bad is that inflation hurts the rich, and they control the discourse. I do not think they would go for a super

I don't think the rich really get anything out of it, but in the Nordic countries, fines increase in proportion to your wealth. I remember reading about a Nokia exec getting pulled over for speeding. His ticket was like $75,000! http://www

Great idea! Now we just need to find some excellent teachers to train the unemployed. Perhaps we can find a few more retired millionaire MIT graduates willing to volunteer their time? In seriousness, I do think more people should consider p

As an American I noticed that when I visited Toronto, Canadians would always compare things to "North America" (as in "Toronto has the 7th largest metro area in North America"). Interestingly, the meaning of this would typically exclude Mex

The reason why wealthy retirees get Social Security and why the tax is capped at $106K/year is the same: it's to prevent Social Security from being a welfare program for poor people Since everyone gets Social Security, this makes it much ha

On the whole, this is a ridiculous article. No one except rich elites cares about the deficit (including the bond market: 30 year treasury notes are yielding 4.5% right now). Republicans may have made noises about it in the last election, b

I love Mercurial, but I agree with this. I tried using the bookmarks extension with a colleague who wanted to use branches this way and we had trouble figuring it out. Definitely not as easy as git (though getting new remote branches with g

It is trivial in Mercurial to back out the last commit: hg rollback I use it all the time to fix typos, add a file I forgot to add, or whatever. Once you push, it is more difficult, but I try not to push my code until it works. I also commi
