Even if there was a privacy.com alternative (I'm not aware of one), they would almost certainly use Plaid. As far as I can tell it's the financial-institution-backed industry standard these days.

There is, it's just not talked about much. It is incredibly hard to run your own email server today because even if you follow all of the rules the big players will often refuse to accept your emails (i.e. defederate your email server)

You're basically right. The devs have explicitly said that the ideal is for every user to run their own instance.that said, while it's not hard to run an instance it's well beyond the level of effort most people are ever goin

Counterpoint, we were gifted an instant pot and used it about half a dozen times before realizing it was an extra piece of kitchen equipment that did absolutely nothing for us in terms of food quality or ease of cooking. It sat in the back

That's not a shadow ban. The differentiator that makes it "shadow" is that the user does not know that it has occurred.

Honest question. How do you stay friends with someone like that? Your friend holds a position of public trust, but he's openly corrupt at his side job. What are the odds that he's completely ethical and upstanding when he's o

I guess. My current project is spacecraft flight software targeting C++98 on GCC 4.3ish. Still we backported a slightly gimped `shared_ptr` and a much more gimped `unique_ptr` for the incredibly limited amount of dynamic allocation we do

If you're returning raw pointers in c++20 something has gone off the rails already. If the memory is wrapped in some kind of RAII structure, then why is it any more of a bug to ignore it than any other return value?

It's a single one-term course in most universities I believe, but engineering ethics is a required subject for ABET-accredited (the standard in the US) engineering degrees.

I know stock grants are ubiquitous in some parts of the tech world, but as someone who only gets paid in cash I have always wondered what percentage of tech jobs actually include significant stock compensation.

I know it's incredibly hard to build a browser engine, but any browser build in chromium is just giving Google more market share, which is a hard pass for me.

Their website really doesn't tell me anything I want to know about a new browser. Most importantly, is it Chromium based?

Wild. Is this a US public school? Just wondering if I should file this away in the very large folder of "WTF are we doing with primary education in this country?"

Just so we're clear, realistically "everyone gave up air travel" means the government shutting down airlines, not people voluntarily not buying plane tickets. I would vote in favor of massively limiting airline travel across

Do you have some evidence there is an actual cost to the Federal government? It seems to me the cost is entirely born by the users of the system.

One compelling reason is the nature of the US Civil Service. In the vast majority of cases, US government employees are extremely hard to fire or lay off for any reason. As a result, each government agency only keeps a small core of staff t

Do you have HTTPS Everywhere or a similar plugin installed? If you look at the page source, it's "redirecting" in a script with this line: window.location.href = 'http://' + prefix + '.neverssl.

neverssl seems to be doing some weird thing where it uses Javascript to load a non-https link rather than an actual redirect. I can't for the life of me guess why that would be better than a simple 301 redirect.

North and South America are on different tectonic plates, while Europe and most of Asia are on a single plate. If anything, the geological definition of continents seems to support separate Americas and a unified Eurasia.
