IBM has ILOG as well which is likely a better match for scheduling problems. Fun Fact: google-ortools was written by the same people that wrote ILOG. You used to have to "bring your own search" when using ortools, which I used to

Denmark by any chance? When I lived there, I was amused how the Danish government was forced to provide free education and a $1,000 a month stipend to foreign EU university students, and then did such a bad job integrating them they all wen

First document every "near-miss" or risk you find. Go make the exact same argument to your CEO, $XX million start-up flatlines with a single slip up. Make it as easy as possible for your CEO to go to the company board, repeat the

Going back to MacOS for my new job gave me RSI. The touchpad centric UI is painful as a power user, and the haptics somehow don't work for me. That and the inability to stretch a desktop across two monitors. I have a T-mux hack and ba

You plan to spend the best years of your life in a job you hate? If you can afford it and growth prospects within the system aren't looking so great, it could be time to take a risk on growing yourself independently for a couple years.

Thank You! I used to do this on my rooted phone back in the day. I've been trying to figure out how to run sshd again, but there seems to be a lot of dodgy stuff on the play store I was never comfortable running. This is it!

A) gas taxes only cover about 30% of the cost of the roads. B) the wear on the road is a fourth order funtion of weight. It would be fantastic if taxes were also proportional.

In "The C++ Programming Language", casting is described as a tool of last resort. Bjarne says he likes long winded cast operators because they stand out as an easily greppable marker of complex code. I wonder if this perception is

It sounds like you want a point with argument theta such that a bunch of constraints are satisfied. I don't think you'll easily be able to find a general polar "r(theta)=...", since your curve is defined by a "sweep

I've personally done something similar through mentorship. Learn something interesting and relevant to the company (in this case scheduling and convex optimization), build something, document, teach others how it works, move on. You ca

This might be due to computers and headphones becoming portable. When I was a kid my PC had a soundblaster connected to a hacky 7.1 setup in my room, and counterstrike supported it.

Err on the side of transparency, but also just ask how much they want to know (maybe during 1-on-1s). Information can create extra individual stress, and some people would rather just be shielded until bad news hits.

I've been on the interview loop with robotics companies. Out of 20, only two had hiring on hold. Many were either already in a cash strong position or had cash strong backers who are long on robotics. I personally am long on robotics.

I have a notebook I filled with Q&As for every point in The CPP Programming Language that surprised me. It's about 40 pages I occasionally read through, though I've been meaning to convert it to spaced repetition.

Thank you for changing my mind on this one, the data clearly contradicts what I said. I'm not European, but I have been living in Scandinavia for the last 4 years. I think I overgeneralized based on what I've seen here.

Anecdotally my last pixel died because the USB-C connector wore out. I have an old iPad that once experienced similar use, and it can still hang upsidedown by the lightning connector. But agreed, hopefully this all goes away with wireless.

I think there's some wisdom in this. A huge amount of talent is about to be unlocked and a lot of BS cleared. The good ideas will continue to be funded, so keeping a keen eye out and being in a position to jump makes sense.

To quote the Wikipedia article, "[regions] which together have 421,480 inhabitants". Billund airport does have a fantastic aeroclub with fast and well maintained aircraft though. Can be in Paris within 4h.
