Well, you say that, but really it's had rather stable and public development, and it was my main desktop for a long time in 2005 and 6. I think part of the reason it became so drawn out was that it was already more or less a release product

You are confusing MPEG the ISO working group with MPEG-LA the private company of lawyers. ISO has nothing to gain from patent trolling, they are financed by the purchase of their standards. MPEG is doing the exact same thing they have since

Every generational codec announcement from MPEG manages to attain "50% improvement", so it really remains to be seen. It certainly is a more advanced codec than H.264, which itself is already rather better than VP8 in its present form. Rega

x264 does not break spec. It looks familiar because H.265 is a very incremental improvement over H.264. I suspect the biggest single difference is the larger transform sizes.

Although there's little to no doubt that Linux was evaluated for Rhapsody (and probably rejected for licensing reasons), another explanation is simply that Free and NetBSD represented a more direct upgrade path from NeXTSTEP's existing 4.3B

I'm personally super excited. Ever since reading this[1] blog post I've wanted to cobble together an editor with some level of libclang integration, but the amount of wheel reinvention involved kept it an idle idea. As a TM user already,

For some of us high density displays have been a holy grail for years. Up until now progress has been stuck as an archetypal chicken and egg problem between display manufacturers and the appearance of resolution independent display servers

You can! http://ompldr.org/vYWh5eA/test2.mp4 This was made by resampling in time with a DCT. Problems with this: 1. practically, it needs the entire movie in memory. 2. gibbs phenomenon in time is really weird. These could both be addre

It would seem to me from perusing the spec that they are simply taking a video, doing a 1D DCT on the time axis and amplifying a "frame" in the result corresponding to the desired period. Hopefully someone can correct me if there's more to

The all-important conclusion (which has yet to be reached) is to the question of whether APIs can be copyrighted. Up until now, all of our software licensing laws have operated under the assumption that APIs and header files are not copyrig

If the judge determines that APIs are indeed copyrightable, will this not have equally important implications for the FSF in the other direction? To use a particularly well-known example, libraries implementing a readline-compatible API cou

It's right here in the code, with this odd fixed timestamp: seconds = epoch_seconds(date) - 1134028003 Which happens to be December 8 2005 -- a few months after reddit began and probably the date this scoring system went into effect.

I'm not clear on the criteria you used for the web-apps column. The LGPL and GPL are listed as applying differently, but to my understanding both are equally agnostic to network use compared with something like the AGPL.

The point is moot. They'll never have to pay money at all since they're only supporting this by interfacing with platform codecs. If they were shipping an H.264 decoder themselves it would be a different matter entirely.
