In Massachusetts, USA, red light cameras were illegal until very recently, due to a 70s era law specifying that a live policeman had to issue a citation for something like that. From well before traffic cameras were common.

This is only true in the region served by Acela that is south of NYC. Nobody, and I mean nobody, is taking Amtrak from BOS to DC unless there's a really good extenuating circumstance.

I took Amtrak from Boston South Station to Montpelier. You have to go south to Connecticut before you can get the Vermonter. The Vermonter was canceled due to contention with a disabled Metro North (or something...) and my connecting train

I am traveling by Amtrak in a few days. You should not consider Amtrak unless desperate. Even then, generally a bus would be better. Amtrak does not exist. It legally has to exist but it is worse than useless, because it pretends that it mi

If you turn off YouTube view history, it breaks Shorts. It also breaks a lot of other shit (e.g. back button after you've clicked a video from a search).

It's unlikely that the current LLMs are conscious, but where the boundary of conscious lies for these machines is a slippery problem. Can a machine have experiences with qualia? How will we know if one does? So we have a few things hap

Hm, yes I agree that winner-take-all is not necessary. A viable monetization strategy is. Meta and Google have this through their ad business, and I think it's possible that some other smaller players might bring in revenue by targetin

Looking at this thread, it's pretty obvious that most folks here haven't really given any thought as to the nature of consciousness. There are people who are thinking, really thinking about what it means to be conscious. Thought

That isn't unique to PG&E. Clear across the country, my utility bill is close to 60% transmission fees. Also what are you doing? Running a flux capacitor?

I believe Google might win the LLM game simply because they have the infrastructure to make it profitable - via ads . All the LLM vendors are going to have to cope with the fact that they're lighting money on fire, and Google have the

Do you ride motorcycles or is this just conjecture? You seem to be reaching for things to convince yourself of the danger. You can reduce the danger of rear impacts on the highway, again, by lane splitting at a bit over the prevailing speed

My commute from Oakland to SF was 20-25 minutes in rush hour (1hr in a car), without having to do anything particularly sketchy, just by filtering/lane splitting. If you're looking at USA stats, you should know that there are many

Yeah if you watch crits you can tell from a still image whether it's fast or not by looking at the grouping. It strings out into a line when it's fast.

Maybe a nit, but In Illinois it's unlikely that what's being farmed goes into people's mouths generally. Corn (not your sweet corn, but field corn) and soy mostly go into other industries e.g. biofuels, animal feed, chemical

PWM itself is fine!!! I have no idea why they set the PWM frequency so low. Even setting it to something like incredibly low like 1kHz would have solved the problem. In electronics land you almost have to try to get frequencies that low o

That one was flying around 60,000ft and weighed probably about 1 ton. Very different kind of balloon. It was shot down by an F22 with an AIM-9 Air-to-air missile. This is the highest altitude air-to-air kill known, and the first combat kill

Even if it made sense to try to take out a balloon, the missiles that can reach 80,000ft+ are tens of million dollars a piece, and not that many countries have access to that type of missile tech.

There were similar connector standards that preceded 38999, e.g. MIL-DTL-5015 as far back as the 30's, which evolved into a couple of subsequent standards, with 38999 emerging in the 70's. Edit: just realized you were maybe referr

It is fascinating to me how 'hackers' went from being people who operated at the margins of established technology (2600, Capn Crunch anyone?), to being the literal establishment, in the sense that probably a good chunk of the &#x
