- jordigh 11y agoAre the prostitutes in Australia typically poor immigrant women? Wealthy, powerful women with a broad spectrum of choices do not typically choose prostitution.

- nailer 11y agoUrban brothels are the most common type of sex work in Australia, and are legal, inspected (and frequented) by the police, very well paid, and generally women of all classes, primarily born in Australia but also China and other Asian countries. See http://www.nswp.org/sites/nswp.org/files/NSWSexIndustryReportV4.pdf http://www.nswp.org/sites/nswp.org/files/NSWSexIndustryRepor... There are other interesting things including 'Sex workers’ reasons for choosing current workplace' was 'Hours are flexible' and 'the LASH study found no evidence that any of the women had been coerced into working in a brothel' Street walking prostitutes are generally illegal, and unregistered brothels are illegal. - jordigh 11y agoAccording to that study, only 27% of all women are historically from Australia and recently only 18% are. The rest are from China, Thailand, and "other Asian". A few stragglers from elsewhere. A majority of them are unable to speak English competently. It does seem like it's primarily foreigners who cannot get a job. This seems exploitative. And the article you cite doesn't paint a rosy picture of everything being great with legalised prostitution.
- x0 11y agoit is legal, however we still have problems with trafficking. many women from china or hong kong come out here, then the pimps just take their passports. they can't speak a word of english, so there's not much they can do.
- Someone 11y agoDo people exchange tips on brothels to visit at work roughly as easily as they do about restaurants or movies? If not, there is a taboo, if not about visiting a brothel, then about talking about it.
- thret 11y agoIt depends on where you work and who you work with. For the most part I'd say it is discussed with about the same frequency as masturbation. That doesn't mean there is a taboo - just that it is often inappropriate to discuss at work.
