I created my going-away party as a Facebook event for three weeks out, invited everyone I knew, and worked backwards from there with my apartment and job and deciding where to go. It worked out splendidly, and I can't imagine having done it any differently. After all that, it would have been totally embarrassing to still be in the city of I'd failed to make it happen :) (disclaimer: I already did and still do have a wonderful relationship with my landlord and employer.)
