I tend to like to allow myself lots of time for "information consumption" balanced with productive output time. So I am in "work" mode maybe 8-9 hours per day. But during that, I allow myself to go off on sustained tangents and don't beat myself up over that -- I trust the tangential learning to be valuable later. (This has proved true for me.) If I didn't value that tangential learning time, I would probably be happy with 4.5 hours of solid "productive" work :)
