Take my family: two adults. We have a computer each, but most of our "computing" is done on phone or tablet. I capture photos from my camera on my tablet, do some basic culling, then transfer to the desktop for archival.
I have my to-do list synched across all devices. I don't actually do much with it on the desktop: again, the desktop is for archival.
The only thing we really use the desktops for is playing EVE Online and being pur personal cloud.
If it wasn't for my distrust of cloud storage, I could get rid of the desktop and my addiction to MMOs.
- vacri 12y agoAnecdata. Like my tech-naive mother who bought an ipad due to all the hype, determined to use it exclusively. She never does; it just gathers dust, and she does all her stuff (mostly social media) on her desktop. Or in my house, I use zero tablets, and my housemates only use their one tablet for casual games and watching youtube. Anything else, from facebooking to creating invoices for contracting, is done on a desktop. Phones are used as a social device, or for googling/wikipediaing away from home. Desktops seem to be dying out in favour of laptops, but desktop OSs aren't being replaced with mobile OSs in my experience.
- seanmcdirmid 12y agoAnecdata meets market realities. Desktops dropped off in favor of laptops a long time ago, was it 2007? Even laptop sales have gone off a cliff in the last few years: http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/171988-pc-business-set-for-worst-decline-ever-no-relief-in-sight http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/171988-pc-business-set-fo... If you know something about the PC market that everyone else doesn't, you could make a killing in the stock market (if you are right, of course). Post PC was always a term meant for companies to make investment decisions in "can we make money on PCs?" or "is the market growing, stagnate, or shrinking;" or "will we make money on that game if it is PC only or do we need to do a bunch of console ports"? It isn't about ideology, its about money.
- vacri 12y agoI was talking to someone earlier today about the problem facing PC manufacturers - it's not that people are abandoning them to tablets, it's that PCs have been 'powerful enough' for a while now. That need to upgrade, that pinch, just isn't felt these days - you upgrade when your computer fails. Well, for most people anyway. That's my guess as to why laptops have tailed off in sales, and not that they've been eaten by tablets. Edit: as an example, I'm an avid gamer, though I don't usually run the latest-gen FPSes. I've gamed for over 20 years, and upgraded my rig every year or two to get better power. My current rig is still running fine, but it's five years old with 6GB ram and a good GPU for the day - and only now am I starting to feel the pinch. The only part to date that's been changed is an SSD swapover when the C:\ drive (with pagefile!) started corrupting after four years.
