The software on these planes do almost everything. There are basically no mechanical/analog linkages left in those planes. Everything the pilot does gets filtered through computer systems. Controlling weapon systems, sensors, flight, navigation, life support, communications - everything is digital.
'Check that the plane is in the air' is like the extreme under statement. Modern fighter jets are inherently dynamically unstable. They require constant adjustment to even fly level. As such, the entirely of flight control is now computer guided. For example, computer systems may apply as series of hard constraints on control surface positions/movements based on the current state (altitude, attitude, speed, rate of change of everything weight, etc).
Nearly every aspect of the plane involves software.
- jokoon 12y agoI'd always prefer having a system that use analogous signals for simple things when it's possible, instead of a full software approach. Hard, thick wires and big components are more resilient and work for a long time. Of course there are task where software will be necessary and will add features, for there are simple things that should not always be digital.
- icegreentea 12y agoThe flip side is that by big thick wires and big components are add mass and volume, both of which are at a premium in planes, and fighter jets especially.
