Lifted On Giant Inner Tubes, An Old Tree Moves In Michigan
- IshKebab 12y agoI think we can all agree this was both a huge waste of money, and very cool.
- na85 12y agoPersonally I'd rather they just leave the fucking tree where it is. Kind of a sad, not-so-subtle metaphor for the way human progress seems to require messing with the environment. They couldn't spend a little more money and change their building's design?
- maxerickson 12y agoNot much of UMs campus in that area qualifies as "the environment", it's been city for ~200 years.
- psykovsky 12y agoChange a building design for a tree that might die at any moment? You're funny. Dumb, but funny nonetheless.
- saalweachter 12y agoI enjoy a certain amount of whimsy in the world. Yes, I would prefer if the world were run a little (or a lot) better in some ways, more money for feeding the hungry and curing death and the like, but I wouldn't want to live in a world where every penny is pinched and we never do crazy shit just for the sake of how awesome it is. Besides, I feel comfortable claiming that $400k wasn't the worst spent out of the $100M allocated for a new building for the business school.
- presidentender 12y agoLike all undertakings, this is as cool as it is clever and difficult. In this case, all three are 'very.' It'd be cooler still if the university did it rather than hiring contractors, perhaps as some sort of dubious research.
- ourmandave 12y agoCan you imagine a returning alumni visiting the campus with their family after a decade or so. "And here kids, is the tree we use to hang out by between classes. It's right next to the building where I, uh... Imagine that, they moved all the buildings."
- gojomo 12y agoThe image of a tree-being-wheeled makes me think of the 'skroderiders' in Vernor Vinge's A Fire Upon The Deep – a ancient race of sentient trees on wheels.
