Actually, I see it as the complete opposite. Oftentimes, the public systems are so broken that sinking money into it is a lost cause. The entrepreneurial solution, taking matter into your own hands and building a better solution, is a much better alternative.
- sschueller 12y agoWhy not "disrupt" by starting a private "public" transport.
- SeoxyS 12y agoThat would be awesome! But, it's not really Facebook (or Google or Apple)'s business or area of expertise. That said, there are a few startups working on it.
- Daishiman 12y agoBecause on the long run it doesn't work. The city of Lima, Peru, has a system of informal buses which go through the city in different routes, and charge an extremely low price. On the surface, it works well, but it suffers a tremendous problem of lack of coordination which leads to huge systemic inefficiencies. The government of Lima is fighting back by improving the public transport infrastructure, but it's a project that will take decades.
- Houshalter 12y agoBut the system works, you're just saying it doesn't work as well as it ideally could if everything was coordinated.
- Daishiman 12y agoI'm saying it is objectively worse than the cities which have coordinated, centralized and effective public transportation systems and the overall cost in lack of regulation, pollution, noise, and other factors is much greater than the alternatives.
