Colgate Total Ingredient Linked to Hormones, Cancer Spotlights FDA Process
- schrodingersCat 12y agoI do appreciate knowing that this ingredient is in Colgate Total. That tube is getting thrown out! Let be clear, this is really old news. Here are a couple HN threads on the topic: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6917335 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6917335 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1251369 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1251369.
- Multics 12y agoLets be clear, those old stories are in regards to soaps!
- schrodingersCat 12y agoSoaps containing triclosan... Toxicity is usually not contained to just one cell-type or organ. My point is that given the past toxicological evidence for this compound, this story should not come as a surprise to anyone.
- Multics 12y ago> Soaps containing triclosan I clearly know that. Look what I said. > this story should not come as a surprise to anyone. It's come as a surprise to you: 'I do appreciate knowing that this ingredient is in Colgate Total. That tube is getting thrown out!'
- zo1 12y ago"I do appreciate knowing that this ingredient is in Colgate Total. That tube is getting thrown out!" You go ahead and do that. Meanwhile, the rest of us will just use the damn toothpaste, because we're not perturbed by the 0.0002238% chance of acquiring cancer when we're in our old age. Or the chance of 0.0000205403% increased risk of hormone imbalance, or whatever the hell hippies complain about these days. *Note, numbers made up. Not even these scare-mongers know the numbers because they're too busy throwing tubes out. The chances are practically insignificant that they might as well be made up.
- caseydurfee 12y agoThe hippies think it's a bad idea to drink Clorox bleach, too. So start chuggin'! You gotta show those dumb hippies they're not the boss of you.
- Someone1234 12y agoJust to save people the click, it is triclosan again. This story has been resurfacing for at least the last few YEARS but yet it is still on the market. I for one have moved to a triclosan free liquid hand soap but a lot of toothpastes continue to contain it.
- instakill 12y agoThat's funny because the only reason I buy Colgate Total is because it's the only toothpaste with triclosan.
- copperx 12y agoIs Triclosan really a problem if I wash my mouth with distilled water? As I understand it, Triclosan reacts with chloride.
- schrodingersCat 12y agoYes, it really is a problem. And using distilled water won't help as chloride ions are naturally in saliva (http://books.google.com/books?id=LKy0weDEFp8C&pg=PA601&lpg=PA601&dq=saliva+chloride+ion+concentration&source=bl&ots=4_ofFA4K7K&sig=fB_8fANm0q-ZwuJJ3xV_OqTmbZc&hl=en&sa=X&ei=6xnpU_mWDbG-sQTgo4DgBA&ved=0CCwQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&q=saliva%20chloride%20ion%20concentration&f=false http://books.google.com/books?id=LKy0weDEFp8C&pg=PA601&lpg=P...).
- freehunter 12y agoWhat is it about triclosan that earns your purchase? Genuine question.
- qohen 12y ago[Note: I'm not the guy you're asking and this isn't meant to be any kind of advice -- dental or otherwise] My dentist told me that Colgate Total was better at killing plaque-creating bacteria due to its use of Triclosan. I just found a FAQ from Colgate about the use of Triclosan in Colgate Total [1] -- here's a short excerpt: Colgate Total® toothpaste is uniquely formulated with 0.3% of the antibacterial ingredient triclosan to fight harmful plaque germs, which are the cause of most common dental problems. Colgate Total® is clinically proven to work better than other toothpastes to reduce these germs that can cause the gum disease gingivitis. - chaostheory 12y agoI didn't know it was in toothpaste. I do know that it's in hand soap, body soap, and even tissues now.
- notastartup 12y agolol....and I was about to go buy Colgate toothpaste because the tv ads show that it's the only way to fight cavaties and germs efficiently.
