Show HN: Weekly – a simple and fast todo list for every device
- habosa 12y agoDeveloper here, would love to hear feedback from HN on the app, website, or anything else. Also for curious developers: this was built using the really cool new 'Chrome Apps for Mobile' tool. It's a Google fork of Apache Cordova that allows you to publish Chrome apps to Android and iOS. I built this with AngularJS on top of that tool. I'll also happily answer questions on the development experience.
- stickperson 12y agoCurious developer here. I want to start exploring Cordova so I can make some native apps, but I have no clue how to structure the project. I'm using Django on the backend, and right now I have a completely separate frontend. For development (it's not on prod yet), I fire up my Django server, use grunt for the frontend, and use my project's API to get data to the frontend. (I had to allow for Cross Origin stuff). Can you talk a bit about how this came to be? Is your frontend completely separate from backend? Did you use any tools such as yeoman for frontend development? Thanks.
- habosa 12y agoSo I may not be the best person to explain these things because I am not an experience frontend web developer and this was my first project with Cordova, but I'll try. My frontend is 100% standalone, my only backends are Google Calendar and Parse so I access those with ajax requests. No server of my own. The front end was built with AngularJS, so I tried to follow a pretty standard Angular project structure. I didn't use yeoman, grunt, or anything like that (purely out of ignorance). This was my first Angular project, first Cordova app, first Chrome app, first iOS app, first time using Parse, etc etc. I definitely don't know all of the best practices but I think the fact that it was so many "firsts" for me speaks to the quality of the tools.
- ocfx 12y agoIs developing with Angular for PhoneGap type applications any different than normal web apps?
- noir_lord 12y agoYou answered the question I was going to ask. No firefox plugin for a while, thats a shame but I like what you did anyway :).
- e12e 12y agoAlways nice to see new apps. As it is free and (?) Ad-free: any chance of publishing the source? Or a "making-of" blog post? I see the Android version is a whooping 32mb... : / I suppose it bundles a run-time of sorts? Why does it ask for permission to access files and photos?
- habosa 12y agoYeah it includes basically a whole version of Chrome Beta so that I can use the Chrome APIs on any phone. Default WebView can't handle all of it. That's something the Chrome team says they are working on reducing.
- habosa 12y agoAnd the files and photos are because the web app has external image resources.
- e12e 12y agoSounds like a bug that those are not bundled (by the tool) into the app. "Access to files and photos" is a pretty wide permission (not that Android is particularly secure anyway -- but one can hope some of the parts will be patched up eventually).
- prawn 12y agoWhat happens if you fail to complete a task on the assigned day? Does it automatically carry forward? I used to use Teux Deux and quite liked how it did that: https://teuxdeux.com/ https://teuxdeux.com/ No matter what I try, I always go back to paper though.
- habosa 12y agoIt stays on that day, however on Sunday when a new week begins all of your tasks that were incomplete from the last week get moved to the current week. Also Teux Deux looks great, I'll try to see how they do things. I too tend to resort to pen and paper, but I'm working on making Weekly my replacement.
