How does Snappy compression fit into the picture?
- dekhn 12y agosnappy is just dictionary coding with no entropy. The code is formed by literals and backreferences. pretty simple design. It's design for reasonable level of compression, with very fast codec. So you use it for comms between programs, where you want messages to move around quickly with fewer bytes than raw. Wouldn't use it for saving tons of data on disk for a long time.
- duskwuff 12y agoIt's another LZ77 derivative. Nothing unprecedented.
- wolf550e 12y agoIt's the current leader in performance: http://fastcompression.blogspot.com/p/compression-benchmark.html http://fastcompression.blogspot.com/p/compression-benchmark....
- maaku 12y agoSpeed != efficiency. Some of the tricks snappy uses e.g. not compressing at all, are not that interesting theoretically.
- AlyssaRowan 12y agoBit like LZ4, but not quite as fast or as good.
- nn3 12y agoOne (new?) trick that snappy uses is to stop compressing for some time when it cannot find matches. This makes it much faster than other compressors on uncompressable files.
