Let's keep in mind that South Africa has been very far from a peaceful place over the last 20 years. Many thousands have been murdered, and many thousands more have left the country.
- richardjordan 13y agobut it also hasn't been the bloodbath many who lived there expected it to become on the fall of apartheid - and Mandela bears a huge portion of the credit for this
- rsynnott 13y agoSouth Africa's murder rate peaked before the end of apartheid; it has been on the decline since. It's still very high, but the idea that it's a result of the collapse of apartheid is not plausible.
