Every time I see a new GitLab release I get excited to install it. Then I see the install instructions and immediately give up. The number one thing GitLab needs is an easier way to get it setup.
- wickchuck 13y agoIf you've dealt wih servers and played with rails it should be pretty trivial for you to set up gitlab. Remember it's open source so before you say it's too hard there are paid alternatives that have one click installers. Gitlab is a fantastic project and it would be worth the time getting it installed.
- overshard 13y agoGitLab is a fantastic project and it is open source but that needs to stop being an excuse for how terrible an install process it has. It wouldn't be a problem or me to install it but it is a huge barrier for many people using it.
- Nican 13y agoTaking a look at the installation process, and it is pretty much trivial, but long. The developers could try creating an apt-get package for even simpler installation.
- X-Istence 13y agoThe install instructions are incredibly simple. As long as you follow the instructions it is set up in less than 30 minutes...
- Diederich 13y agoI would not call them "incredibly simple", but I have also gotten gitlab going in about half an hour, twice.
- X-Istence 13y agoIt is as simple as copy and paste, make some small modifications to the configuration file and you go from a stock Ubuntu server install to having Gitlab up and running. I would call that simple.
- chii 13y agoto a non-sophisticated user, following instructions (which they may or may not understand the reasons for) instead just running a single executable is complicated.
- sytse 13y agoGitLab.com co-founder here. Thank you for commenting. We're looking into packaging but this will take some time. Maybe you can try the Bitnami images (http://bitnami.com/stack/gitlab http://bitnami.com/stack/gitlab), they are already upgraded to 6.0.
- anonymousDan 13y agoHey sytse, Is there any downside to using the bitnami images?
- sytse 13y agoNot as far as I know, they are very good.
