I moved to SF in 2009 and left because a product I made got acquired by an NYC company. I lived in NYC from 2010-2012, then moved back. Although things have changed so much here that sometimes I have second thoughts! There are some things you can point to as indicators (e.g. rents have doubled). But I have a harder time gauging the sort of atmosphere/ethos and whether that's changed or I have.
