As a musician, I would disagree heavily with the author's statement that "people learn to read [musical notation] fluently with a little training".
A few certain individuals can be musical without being musically literate but understanding musical notation definitely requires training. It's like literacy, it's not something you just pick up out of nowhere. It's intentional, it's practiced, and it is honed.
- johndcook 13y agoSure, it takes work. But we expect children to be able to do it and they do.
- ionforce 13y agoSurely not all children? You mean children enrolled in music class, which I don't think qualifies as a small amount of training.
- nfoz 13y agoBoth as a small child and as an adult, learning music I'm suuuuper distracted by the complexity and the badness of traditional music notation.
- ionforce 13y agoWhat makes it complex and bad?
- Daishiman 13y agoIn my experience the vast majority of popular musicians cannot read musical notation, and it doesn't really seem to impact much. It seems like it's more important to read Fruity Loops or Ableton filter notation nowadays.
