Having lived many years prior to social media, it feels very clear that social media fundamentally warps people in a way they weren’t before.
If you have only lived within it, it makes sense to underestimate the impact.
- Hizonner 13d agoHaving lived many years prior to social media, I'm gonna say that "fundamentally warps people" is pretty damned overwrought language.
- AaronAPU 13d agoIt seems fair to me. Consider the influence it has on an individual’s fundamental moral predicates. It shapes them by exposing them to emotion-laden content and burrows us into individual niches of hyper-optimized recommendation algorithms. The fundamental is there, the warping is there. What do you suppose is overwrought about the language?
- AngryData 13d agoMeh, I don't see it warping people anymore than watching major news networks did and does. The only difference is instead of being force fed a certain perspective of bullshit, social media lets you fish around for your own brand of bullshit.
- mitxela 13d agoNo it doesn't. It just detects what you are most receptive to, and force feeds you that.
- mrguyorama 12d agoEven the big news networks were "only" warping the minds of about 50 million americans total. Go ahead and compare that to Facebook's reach. Fox News never convinced me to watch it because of other people in my family watching it. MSNBC never got popular at school.
