- mariusseufzer 18d agoDidn’t know humans are spending that much time in space, over a year wow! I guess they need to workout daily to keep the muscles intact?
- static_motion 17d agoThat figure you see on the website is total time in space for that cosmonaut, not one big stretch. Though the record for longest single mission is over 400 days, and record for cumulative longest time is over 1100, both by Russian cosmonauts.
- echoangle 17d agoYeah, they have exercise equipment there https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Resistive_Exercise_Device https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Resistive_Exercise_De... Apparently they exercise around 2h every day
- feraloink 18d agoThis is better than the Magic 8-ball. I DO like the visuals after clicking the Magic 8-ball though!
- darknavi 18d ago> WHO IS IN SPACE is a project created by Destin Sandlin of Smarter Every Day and Geoff Barrett. Neat. Destin has a great talk that he gave to/at NASA about Artemis a few years ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoJsPvmFixU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoJsPvmFixU
- bobson_dugnutt5 18d agoLai Ka-Ying. Nominative determinism!
- dima55 18d ago"Laika" is the generic dog name in Russian. Means "barker".
- hamdingers 18d agoReminds me of the original: https://www.howmanypeopleareinspacerightnow.com/ https://www.howmanypeopleareinspacerightnow.com/
- bbbrad 18d agoI appreciate you recognizing us as the OG. We've tracked every launch since 2009! Who is in space, they seem like nice people, I love the Smarter Every Day crew. (They actually tried to buy my domain years ago.) Pretty lame that they're running those insane Starlink ads but it is what it is.
- jedberg 17d agoOne thing I like better about this one is that it breaks it down by mission and location. Would be a cool improvement to your site.
- bbbrad 17d agoI also think that would be pretty cool. But, I think one of the things that people have loved about my site is that it really just sticks to answering the question that the URL asks and tries not to get lost in the read-more sauce. At one point we had an iOS app that had more information (and notifications!) but that thing hasn't been updated in a long time.
- asdfman123 18d agoI feel like this post is just an AI slop copy of that site designed to grab free ad revenue. I've flagged it and recommend others do the same.
- ramshorns 17d agoI liked checking that website, until it listed the Artemis II crew for weeks after they came back. Now I have no idea how accurate it is; I don't know what other source to compare it to. But maybe there's a more reliable method it uses for tracking the ISS astronauts, and the Artemis II needed more human input or something. For what it's worth, both websites currently list the same ten astronauts.
- zatkin 18d agoThis website is unusable without closing out advertisements upon advertisements...
- eek2121 18d agoMaybe you should create whoisinspacewithnoads.com? :D
- ASalazarMX 18d agoHow about a new TLD, .noads?
- baublet 18d agoYeah warning to mobile users, too. Basically unusable website because of the ads. I miss the ad free web.
- wowthatsucks 18d agoInteresting. I don't see any ads, even with my ad blocker turned off.
- wildzzz 18d agoThose SpaceX suit photos look dumb. I very much prefer the traditional look of the Russian and Chinese crew photos.
- ChrisArchitect 18d agoAnyone else read this as WHOIS in space? Was ready to find out which TLDs had Galactic Coordinates for contact details
- TimC123456 17d agoYes! That’s what I was hoping for when I clicked on it, too!
- reynard_le_faux 18d agoWe’re all in space bro
- probablyStimmed 18d agoWhoisdangerouslyfarfromthesurfaceofearth.com doesn’t have the same ring.
- bcorigliano 18d agoA good concept, I like it! But pleas make ads less invasive. I understand we all need to pay our bills, but that shouldn't interfere with the user experience. Besides that, I didn't know there were so many guys in space as we speak!
- dosshell 18d agoSomeone on HN that does not use ad block? This is still so confusing for me. Why not spend 40 seconds and never see any ads more?
- hectdev 17d agoOr AdGuard on a Raspberry Pi paired with Tailscale and never see ads on any machines you own again even on cellular.
- brewtide 17d agoI have these both installed as 'extensions' on my homeassistant.vm and it works wonderfully. Any device that is on my local network, ads blocked. If I want to access my home network and/or block ads when mobile, tailscale gets connected, ads blocked. highest of recommendation, I agree.
- r0m4n0 17d agoSome reasons I don't use them anymore (in no specific order) 1. I have had them subtly mess with websites I am working on and I probably wasted multiple hours troubleshooting an issue that wasn't an issue 2. I have had them break a web form when I was trying to purchase something 3. I have purchased some things I like from ads and wouldn't have discovered otherwise 4. I don't frequent websites that overuse them or I can't work around them 5. I'm on a work laptop sometimes and I'm not allowed to use them for corp security reasons 6. I'm not sure I trust the ad blockers themselves, their developers, or their own app security 7. It's another process that can slow down viewing a webpage
- 17d ago
- tlofreso 18d agoThe adsense on this site annoys me. It's run by Dustin from Smarter Every Day (at least it was in 2023 https://x.com/smartereveryday/status/1631364605426511872 https://x.com/smartereveryday/status/1631364605426511872). In the past, the site did not serve ads.
- actionfromafar 18d agoThe helmet portraits look goofy as hell.
- ksd482 17d agoI always wondered why in movies they did this. After thinking for 2.3 seconds, I concluded it's because so that movie watchers can see their faces. Is there any other reason ? I mean, they don't have lights inside the helmet that shines on your own face, right? That would mess with your ability to see.
- deleted 18d ago[deleted]
- zekejohn 18d agonot enough ads, i could almost see the content
- bjourne 18d agoCall me crazy... but there's something about their faces. Almost like all of them are brothers and sisters. Creepy in a way.
- sqquima 18d agoWho is in space? Well, Tim Curry of course!
- ldkge 18d agoI guess we’re doxxing people now
- deleted 18d ago[deleted]
- walrus01 18d agowhois in space? what about RDAP in space? https://www.rfc-editor.org/info/rfc9082/ https://www.rfc-editor.org/info/rfc9082/
- ligarota 18d agoWhole website for an ad btw
- jakeinspace 18d ago^
- stephenhuey 18d agoSafari on MacBook Pro sees the time text wrapping in such a way that when the time is pushed to the next line, it literally overlaps partly with the "Total Time in space" label. The time is halfway up the letters of the label. And these are the biggest ads I've seen obscuring a webpage in a very long time!
- ck2 17d agoneat adding it to my collection next to https://NextSpaceFlight.com https://NextSpaceFlight.com bit grusome but would be interesting to compare known time in space against increased cancer and eyesight problems that all the astronauts seem to come back with I believe longest time in spacewalk was 9 hours but they spent 22 hours outside the capsule during the three days on the moon cosmic rays are a b*tch
- low_tech_punk 17d agoChinese and Russian space suits are almost identical in the photos!
- vova_hn2 17d agoWiki says [0]: "Derivative versions of Sokol continue to be worn by Chinese taikonauts on flights of the Shenzhou spacecraft today, though details of the suits' design differ slightly; they are also reported to weigh less than the Russian version of Sokol." [0] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sokol_space_suit#Use_by_countries_other_than_Russia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sokol_space_suit#Use_by_countr...
- Philip-J-Fry 17d agoDestin of Smarter Every Day went down the drain in my books as soon as he published a video about Flagella, and ended it by suggesting it could be intelligent design and told viewers to read a book authored by someone who is a staunch believer of intelligent design. Crossed the line as a science Youtuber. You don't need to be athiest to be a scientist, and he definitely isn't. But you should at least know the line. Finding out this site is basically just a copy of something that already existed and something they knew existed just further degrades my opinion of him. Especially with it being littered with ads. The ad literally takes up half my screen.
- spiderfarmer 17d agoAs a publisher who relied on Adsense it’s so sad to see how Google is absolutely destroying the industry with every user hostile practice imaginable. It’s absolutely disgusting and pathetic. They are hooked on a type of crack that will ruin the product in the long run.
- LadyCailin 17d agoHe went down my drain a long time ago for the same reason. I also find it funny how his good ole boy down south project to make a grill scrubber has basically just re-discovered what all the predominately atheist city slickers have been trying to tell the predominantly Republican voting south, which is that unregulated free market capitalism is the problem.
- vablings 17d agoThe problem he found was not unregulated free market capitalism, rather the opposite. Suppliers and supply chains did not operate on the free market and the denigration of manufacturing in north America due to worker/talent shortage
- LadyCailin 17d agoOutsourcing to cheaper locales is the unregulated free market at work. Why would the free market pay you more when I can pay less to someone else, for equivalent enough work? Because you’re an American? The unregulated market does not care about that factor. Manufacturing doesn’t pay enough to attract workers, if it did, this wouldn’t be a problem.
- varispeed 17d agoThose Russians could get as far as they could from the stench of Putin and his genocidal war.
- vova_hn2 17d agoTechnically, you would need to go to Waitangi, NZ (the closest city to Moscow's antipodal point [0]). When you are in the orbit you will periodically be much closer to Putin than if you just stayed at the antipodal point or close to it. [0] https://www.geodatos.net/en/antipodes/russia/moscow https://www.geodatos.net/en/antipodes/russia/moscow
- indigodaddy 17d agoJeezus h the ads ruin it W H Y Is it really worth the potential of like $1 month if you're rockin the shit out of it, when you can host for free or basically free anywhere these days Oh I checked whois on one of the IPs and they are using square space. I guess that's why. Gotta recoup something from inexplicably deciding to use squarespace
- sph 17d agoNot using an adblocker in 2026 AD is just asking for it
- goda90 17d agoMorbid curiosity: Are there any deceased individuals whose bodies were not recovered from space?
- vova_hn2 17d agoI don't think so. So far all fatalities [0] happened either during launch or during launch or during landing. The only fatal incident that happened technically still in space (above the Kármán line) is Soyuz 11 [1], but it happened after the landing sequence was already started, so the capsule landed normally, just with the dead crew. It appears that just hanging out in the orbit is relatively safe, going up there and going down is risky. Same with aircraft, btw, most accidents happen during take-off, shortly after take-off or during landing. Cruising at a stable altitude is very safe. - grimpy 17d agothis is spam. not in a derogatory way, but in a literal way.
- spprashant 17d agoThis is how I discover China has its own space station. > When China formally requested to join the ISS program in 2007, Roscosmos and the European Space Agency (ESA) supported cooperation with China, but the Wolf Amendment, enacted by the United States since 2011, prohibited Chinese participation. That same year, China launched Tiangong-1, gaining rendezvous and docking experience. 10 years later, they had a fully operation space station. Say what you will, the Chinese are efficient once they set their mind to something.
- jedberg 17d ago> Say what you will, the Chinese are efficient once they set their mind to something. Sometimes a single party communist government has its advantages. When you don't have to worry about pesky things like human rights and property rights, you can move pretty quickly!
- kelipso 17d agoI don’t really understand the purpose of these cope posts anymore. It’s getting comical at this point.
- wyclif 17d agoZhang Zhiyuan has amazing eyebrow game.
- cadamsdotcom 15d agoSorry, but that's quite an antique take. Modern China has morphed itself into a highly capable society. They make your drones, they make your computers, they make your textiles... and mostly, they do it while providing their people better quality of life than the previous generation. Counter-anecdotes abound as you'd expect t from a society of millions. But there's widespread prosperity over there. There are plenty of decent opportunities for those who want to work hard, no different to how it is in the US.
- cheschire 17d agoShatner was the 597th person in space only five years ago. We are rapidly increasing the frequency new folks are making it into space. Impressive!
- monoRepo11 17d agoThat’s cool, anyone know when the timer starts for mission start? Is it when they step into their shuttle?
- alun 17d agoThis is pretty cool. Number of humans in space feels like a good proxy for space progress. So it would be interesting to have a metrics dashboard view of it. For example a daily / weekly / monthly graph of how many people are in space during each timeframe. Filters by company, nationality, age, etc. Would be an interesting way to see how space progress is being made and where it's mostly coming from.
