People who are still on Chrome as main browser should seriously try Safari 27. Compatibility greatly improved, super speedy.
Although for some reason the AI organise tab option is not showing up on me.
- tensor 19d agoStill waiting for them to allow me to use any search provider I want (e.g. Kagi).
- al_borland 19d agoI had Safari build me an extension that lets me press control+space on any page to bring up a spotlight-type search box and to search in Kagi. It did it, it works… but it’s beyond stupid that this still isn’t just a setting to add a custom query string, even if they bury it in the advanced settings.
- Melatonic 18d agoOrion is pretty solid
- dewey 19d agoI wish they would improve the extension support in Safari. I'm on Safari full time but I always dread the moment I have to install an extension. If the extension even exists (Firefox / Chrome is easy, so developers always do that and they don't have to pay Apple a fee) download some app, then click some button to open Safari settings, then enable the extension there, then give it permissions in the Safari menu bar. Horrible UX.
- petesergeant 19d agoFeels like the perfect thing to vibe-code based on existing FF/Chrome extensions? Decent agent should make pretty light work of it.
- dewey 19d agoThat gives you the extension, but the workflow within macOS for users is still very user hostile. Problem with extensions might be that the training data isn't that great as there's not that many open source Safari extensions.
- doublepg23 19d agoOn Safari I use - Wipr (Ad Blocker) - 1Password (Password Manager) - Dark Mode HN (HN dark mode hack.) Not really sure what else I need tbh
- dewey 19d agoI use 1Password, RSS Button (To highlight if the page has a feed, so I can subscribe with my own Miniflux instance), 1Blocker (Ad blocking), Tampermonkey for loading userscripts on some websites, Readdeck extension to easily send something to my "read later" pile. It's not a lot of them, but every time I want to test a new one I dread it.
- elektor 19d agoJust a heads up, you can have dark mode on every website on iOS Safari with Dark Reader: https://darkreader.org/ https://darkreader.org/
- nick_ 19d agoI use Dark Reader on Chrome, Edge, and Firefox, but I've found Noir to be better on Safari.
- squirreljak 19d agoWBlock is great too if you’re looking for something that’s free and/or more customizable. It’s the uBO of Safari basically
- GeekyBear 19d ago> I wish they would improve the extension support in Safari. They added the ability to vibe code your own custom extensions in this version.
- SchemaLoad 19d agoI honestly think vibe coding your own extensions would be safer than using 3rd party ones which are malware more often than not.
- doublepg23 19d agoWhen I switched to macOS in '22 I went to Safari from Firefox and I don't think I've run into a single compatibility issue.
- jmuguy 19d agoDoes uBlock Origin (or something equivalent) work in Safari?
- jhickok 19d agoThe standard answer is Wipr but nothing is as good as uBlock Origin imo. It's passable enough that I daily drive Safari now.
- fady0 19d agoThere’s an official Safari version [1], but it’s more like a toy compared to Firefox. [1]https://apps.apple.com/us/app/ublock-origin-lite/id6745342698 https://apps.apple.com/us/app/ublock-origin-lite/id674534269...
- nick_ 19d agoAdGuard as well.
- squirreljak 19d agowBlock and AdGuard
- basisword 19d ago>> Although for some reason the AI organise tab option is not showing up on me. From what I recall, I had this in the first beta then it disappeared and never came back.
- squirreljak 19d agoDo tech savvy people actually use chrome on iOS? Why?
- al_borland 19d agoMy assumption would be for account syncing. I use Safari, but whenever I go on a pilgrimage to try a different browser, I also get it on my phone so I can access tabs and bookmarks whenever I am.
- einsteinx2 19d agoFor syncing from desktop chrome probably
- dabinat 19d agoBrowsers on iOS may be using the same rendering engine under the hood but they make different decisions for UI or how certain features work. They can be useful if you don’t like the decisions Apple made with Safari. An example of a decision Safari made that I don’t like: if you open too many tabs you reach a limit, but it doesn’t tell you that and just silently overwrites other tabs you have open.
- almyk 19d agoif the "back" functionality is still laggy and not instant I won't change from firefox to safari.
