Ask HN: Has AI killed the front end engineer role?
- trio8453 20d agoNo more than any other engineer role, why are you singling out front end?
- codegeek 20d agoNo. AI is killing the average/mediocre/order taker roles whether frontend or backend or full stack. Nt because it is necessarily better than the mediocre ones but because it is 100x cheaper. Can't beat that. My honest answer.
- dormento 20d ago> My honest answer. You could even say it is load-bearing.
- CM30 20d agoNo, but it's killing a lot of 'glue pieces together' or 'make plugins/tweaks' for a CMS roles. If you're using WordPress, Drupal, etc, then AI is devastating. Any sort of project that's not a massive site build with tons of bespoke features and heavy performance requirements is almost certainly cheaper and easier to build with something like Claude. And a lot of small projects seem like they'll be lost to AI in general. It seems like the days of small web agencies getting a team of 3-10 developers together to build simple sites for local businesses are quickly coming to a close. But front end in general isn't doomed. Just engineering roles dealing with smaller, simpler projects.
