We are doing a lot. Almost 90% of electricity capacity added last year was renewables. Nearly 1 in 3 cars sold are now EVs. The world is spending over $2 trillion every year on low‑carbon energy investment. Solar and wind have already avoided more than 2 gigatons of CO2 being added to the atmosphere. In the US, the IRA will drop emissions 40% to below 2005 levels.
What do you mean we are doing nothing?

- rcpt 2mo agoThe federal government is paying energy companies to cancel plans to build wind farms: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c1e1vg0gjl5o https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c1e1vg0gjl5o Yes we're still building renewable energy, but goddamn is our government making it hard.
- api 2mo agoWe are still building renewable energy even with a stupid government because it's now cheaper than fossil fuels in many markets.
- CGMthrowaway 2mo agoThose are refunds of money already paid, it's not any extra money
- thrance 2mo agoThat's added capacity. Fossil fuel use is at an all times high. Everything else is meaningless.
- CGMthrowaway 2mo agoPeak oil is not really a thing anymore, we are on to global mean surface temperatures now.
- ColdStream 2mo agoWe are doing loads, I just fear we cannot outrun Jevon's paradox. Until we start actively reducing emissions, we are just adding to the scale of consumption with no end in sight. That we are still adding any fossil fuel based system today is something I would have figured would have stopped by now. I figured we would still have some legacy stuff, but overall would be decommissioning more than we would add. Instead, we just add to everything.
