- breezybottom 2mo agoSince when do AI companies care about copyright law? They're destroying them so their competitors can't use them.
- alightsoul 2mo agoSince they had to pay 1.5 billion for it
- freejazz 2mo agoYou'd think they could've negotiated something better than $3k per work if they had actually gone to the table first.
- eru 2mo ago> They're destroying them so their competitors can't use them. That's pretty silly. My competitor can't ride my bike either, and I didn't have to destroy the bike for that to be true.
- gpt5 2mo agoA little meta - I want to point out demagogic/populist comments like these that try to clear all nuance and brush a topic in black and white tend to come from a really small portion of the users here, but the same user (whose account is only 4 months old), dominates posts like this by posting many many bait-like comments in the same post that deviate the discussion away from meaning and insight. This is just one example, but it has become unfortunately common across all social media platforms.
- freejazz 2mo agoIf that's true, then why did they pirate so many books?
- scarmig 2mo agoIs your complaint that they follow copyright law, or that they don't follow copyright law?
- Planktonne 2mo agoA company with no respect for copyright law can't pretend they respect it when it is convenient for them; it's disingenuous, and shows that there is clearly another explanation.
- freejazz 2mo agoI'm not complaining
- parineum 2mo agoBecause they hadn't been sued for pirating so many books yet.
- freejazz 2mo agoWell its not like copyright was invented last year...
- parineum 2mo agoThey was a really good chance they wouldn't have gotten caught before when LLMs were less successful. It was their success that got them caught. Now, if they continued pirating, they'd definitely get caught and the judgements against them would reflect their repeated transgressions.
- freejazz 2mo agoThere was no judgment against them, it was a settlement and against only Anthropic. They asked their attorneys and they knew it was wrong. I have no sympathy for them. It's an insane kind of hubris to do what they did, thinking it would change the world, and that no one would notice what they did. So I don't even really agree with your characterization, as they were convinced what they were doing was a risk worth taking, on the assumption it would be successful.
