I lost my individual healthcare plan, and I couldn’t afford the new ones. Remember when they said you could keep your plan? Yeah, that’s the one I lost.

- QuercusMax 2mo agoThere was never a guarantee that you were going to keep your plan anyway, was there? Insurance companies are changing plans from year to year.
- jtbayly 2mo agoThe plan was cancelled because of ACA requirements. I had had it for several years prior. Yes, plans change, but this was different.
- QuercusMax 2mo agoWhich requirements made them cancel it? Was it a high deductible scam plan?
- jtbayly 1mo agoIt was a high deductible insurance plan, not a monthly subscription to all your healthcare needs. Why would you call that a “scam”? And for the record, it was not as high a deductible as most “silver” plans on the exchange currently.
- bonsai_spool 1mo ago> It was a high deductible insurance plan Why do you believe that the ACA would have wanted such plans cancelled? There's a very straightforward public health reason that's reminiscent of why states require drivers to have car insurance. > And for the record, it was not as high a deductible as most “silver” plans on the exchange currently. The plan would have been in effective over 18 years ago. Does your internet plan look the same now as it did 18 years ago? Your cell phone plan?
- runako 1mo ago> The plan would have been in effective over 18 years ago This is such an important point. There's been ~40% of cumulative inflation over that period. Also, anyone who was already buying insurance for years before the ACA knew the price has always gone up every year, often by double-digit percentages. Simple compounding plus the fact that insurance is always more expensive for people 18 years older are confusing a lot of people in this discussion.
- jtbayly 1mo agoYou act like I’m an idiot. It was cancelled immediately when ACA was passed, and I couldn’t afford the new plans the same year. My point about the current plans is that if you want to call them a “scam” because they are high deductible, you have to call almost all current plans scams.
- runako 1mo agoI was responding to someone else, not addressing your situation directly.
- lovich 2mo agoIt’s reminiscent of the screeching about how single payer healthcare would have death panels deciding who lived or died like that’s not a word for word description of insurance company actuaries or financial employees making the same decisions.
- czgov 2mo agoWould you have been able to keep your plan under the system before ACA? There’s a lot of context missing in your comment.
- khriss 2mo agoI'm curious as to how your experience actually using the plan for more than preventive coverage? IIRC, plans before the ACA had a ton of customer unfriendly provisions which made the insurance far less usable in practice. E.g. denying coverage for preexisting conditions.
