It’s Time to Fix the Pitifully Slow, Expensive Internet Access in the U.S.
- breckinloggins 14y agoEveryone has their "Overly Ambitious Startup Idea" and this one is mine: I want fast, low latency, reliable, affordable Internet access anywhere in rural America. I'm the kind of tech geek who would gladly live in a cabin in the middle of nowhere with nothing but solar, wifi, and a couple of chickens. But Internet access holds me back and I'm sure I'm not alone. The new 12mbps Exceed service looks good, but it's still high latency satellite. I think if we made quality rural Internet a priority, we would see a revitalization of rural living and small towns. How refreshing it would be to find a startup or two in every small town along with the farmers and the sheriff!
- joezydeco 14y agoWell if you don't want satellite, you've got to string wires somehow. And this country is HUGE. So anything other than a government-scale effort is going to be overly ambitious by default.
- breckinloggins 14y agoExactly. That's why it's a wistful post on HN and not a business plan :)
- pstuart 14y agoWhy not wireless?
- joezydeco 14y agoWIMAX or LTE in a rural town would be fine, but you're still going to need to get that town into the grid somehow. You'll still be stringing fiber to the nearest big city or MAE.
- freehunter 14y agoI have a house on property about 70 miles out of the city. I would love to live there, but instead I share a house with some housemates in the city close to my job. I can work from home easily, but where my house sits only has dial-up and 3G, neither suitable for VPN and Skype all day every day. I hate living in the city. I want rural broadband so I can live in the house my grandparents left to me.
