Americans hate AI so much that politicians are losing their jobs over it
- mikestew 3mo agoSo, one example of a politician losing their job at the end of the article? Not exactly making the case for the headline, considering number of words in the article. And the issue at hand, of course, is really data centers and not AI.
- add-sub-mul-div 3mo agoData centers were a niche or nonexistent issue before the dislike of AI became mainstream.
- jaredcwhite 3mo agoIt's about data centers AND it's about AI.
- thot_experiment 3mo agoAll my homies hate AI. It has really given us a perfect emblem of the worst capitalism has to offer, I'm not holding my breath but perhaps this backlash will precipitate further change to drive us toward a flatter economy and a society that does a better job of rejecting exploitation and concentration of power. One that more effectively serves humanity and allows us to find a much better global optimum.

- uncivilized 3mo agoYou must be new here.
- HeyLaughingBoy 3mo agoThat's an escape, not a release.
- dyauspitr 3mo agoI’m all for no concentration of power but not at the expense of technological progress. Are you seeing the physical AI that has just begun to explode over the last few months? Robots can now literally reliably put your clothes into a washing machine, start it, move them to the dryer, pull them out and fold and stack all of them. They can almost reliably rinse and put your dishes into the dishwasher, start it, then pull them out and put them away into your cabinets. This is all paradigm shifting stuff, and I’ll resist any attempt to stall progress in that space so some people can have a job for a few more months.
- thot_experiment 3mo agoA. That's not a useful thing I care about nor should you (in the context of the current state of things) and B. I don't oppose AI as a concept. I oppose it as an emblem of the failure of our systems of governance to serve the common man. I oppose the implementation that people colloquially mean when they say AI, I have nothing against tensor blobs and I more or less wish intellectual property was abolished.
- dyauspitr 3mo agoA robot that does all of the chores in your house and outside your house is not useful? I’m going to stop reading right there.
- thot_experiment 3mo agoNot in the current context no, opportunity costs exist.
- handoflixue 3mo agoWell, given that stunning list of zero opportunity costs, I'm sure forced to reconsider my stance. Very persuasive!
- owebmaster 3mo agoDo you think we are anywhere near that? Do you have a vacuum cleaner robot?
- dyauspitr 3mo agoSounds like wishful thinking. Most Americans I know are furiously using LLMs in every aspect of their lives, tradesmen included.
- mey 3mo agoTwo things can be true. The data centers can be driving up electricity costs, causing pollution, planning issues, and computer hardware shortages _and_ people can be finding the tools useful.
- dyauspitr 3mo agoThen mandate clean energy generation for data centers, not some outright ban bullshit.
- margalabargala 3mo agoThe cleanliness of the energy consumed is not the reason why it is to the detriment of a community to have a data center nearby. That said banning it across the whole state, in a state with ample industrial parks and water resources, does seem excessive.
- foul 3mo agoData centers should at least be autonomous for energy generation and cooling systems, in the current utilities landscape in US the energy company dictates price mostly by demand and Big Tech will always have enough money to pay, the water company will have to clean more freshwater and in dry season will never cut off the datacenter: these are (summing that with no convenience whatsoever for nearby towns, few to no people in those communities will work for the datacenter. Maybe they pay good taxes to towns but it isn't a given either) in my opinion very solid elements to view a datacenter as a menace.
- sterlind 3mo agoI don't think Americans hate AI, but many of us really hate how we're being treated like horses destined for the glue factory during the rise of the automobile.
- UqWBcuFx6NV4r 3mo agoThis is hilarious delusion. Not only does America apparently hate AI (lol), but for the first time in a very long time, the American public has apparently managed to successfully mobilise and oust politicians! Plural! and a large enough number to be noteworthy!
- handoflixue 3mo agoUh, top comment says "exactly one" so where are you getting "enough to be noteworthy"?
- iwontberude 3mo agoYou missed the sarcasm I think
