I mean, they did eventually get rid of the Danes.
- grey-area 4mo agoThe Danes colonised England. They never left but merged with the existing population. https://www.britannica.com/place/Danelaw https://www.britannica.com/place/Danelaw
- bpodgursky 4mo agoNot really, the genetic contribution of Danes to modern English DNA is somewhere 0-10%. There was some merging but pretty marginal.
- grey-area 4mo agoThey were the ruling class of half of England for a significant period. That is not marginal. It influenced laws, culture and language, though later displaced by the Normans who also had a profound impact. Were the Normans also marginal as they did not have a huge genetic impact?
- ChrisRR 4mo agoNo they didn't. The vikings became part of the population
- vinceguidry 4mo agoThe school bully rarely has a great life after high school. In this case, the bully ended up working for them.
- Tangurena2 4mo agoThat involved a rather genocidal approach in 1065 - killing everyone related to, or doing business with the Vikings. This tends to get downplayed by historians. And when the Vikings/Norsemen came back for revenge in 1066, King Harold 2nd managed to kill off the Viking force at Stamford Bridge, but was too exhausted when William invaded down south (being defeated at Hastings). 300-ish miles is a short drive by car, but in an era long before preserved food or mechanized transport, such a march over about 2 weeks would have been terrible. - bpodgursky 4mo agoOh I know, it was ugly. The OP just phased it like the brits were still paying tribute to the Danes.
