US and Iran reach cease fire agreement
- noah34 4mo agoi've lost track of which agreement we are on
- mindslight 4mo agoExcellent. I've been having a hard time knowing what day of the week it is lately, and this will remind me it is a Monday.
- lyu07282 4mo agoThe key part to understand why this means nothing: > Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said in a statement that the country had finalized a memorandum of understanding with the United States > The agreement will be signed on Friday > In a statement, Supreme National Security Council said the agreement called for an immediate end to military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon But Israel is never going to reverse its invasion of Lebanon, its key to their Greater Israel[1] project. It's important to know that Israel is currently occupying parts of southern Lebanon [2]. Trump would have to force Israel to stop its illegal invasion, that's never going to happen. - jameshilliard 4mo ago> Holy shill account Some of us just haven't fallen for terrorist propaganda.
- calgoo 4mo agoI'll bite, so the genocide is not happening then? Israel is not murdering innocent civilians on a grand scale, be that by directly killing or by indirect ways of starving them out?
- jameshilliard 4mo ago> I'll bite, so the genocide is not happening then? Of course it's not genocide(I assume you're referring to Gaza like most others who make this claim), there is a war against an organization(Hamas) that embeds itself within a civilian population(which is a war crime). > Israel is not murdering innocent civilians on a grand scale, be that by directly killing or by indirect ways of starving them out? There is collateral damage(due to Hamas embedding within civilian populations) and various degrees of food insecurity, but there is no evidence of any mass starvation.
- dh2022 4mo agoHere is your evidence on mass starvation in Gaza. Shame on you. https://news.un.org/en/story/2025/07/1165517 https://news.un.org/en/story/2025/07/1165517 https://www.who.int/news/item/22-08-2025-famine-confirmed-for-first-time-in-gaza https://www.who.int/news/item/22-08-2025-famine-confirmed-fo... https://www.redcross.org.uk/stories/disasters-and-emergencies/world/whats-happening-in-gaza-humanitarian-crisis-grows https://www.redcross.org.uk/stories/disasters-and-emergencie...

- lyu07282 4mo agoThese wars would only ever end if every force in the middle east that offers resistance to Israel's ambitions are defeated, but that resistance is both inevitable and offers the exact justification needed to implement said ambitions, its wonderfully circular. In Gaza they literally pulverized entire cities [1], making them uninhabitable, this isn't even really a war on terror by the western mainstream's standards, its a war on concrete paid for with american tax payer bombs and bulldozers. They are replicating that same exact playbook in Lebanon right now [2]. How morally bankrupt or completely misinformed do you have to be, to support this absolute barbarism at this point. - jameshilliard 4mo ago> These wars would only ever end if every force in the middle east that offers resistance to Israel's ambitions are defeated, but that resistance is both inevitable and offers the exact justification needed to implement said ambitions, its wonderfully circular. Obviously if there are terrorist attacks coming from a neighboring country then one would expect retaliation. You seem to be arguing terrorist attacks don't justify a response. > In Gaza they literally pulverized entire cities [1], making them uninhabitable That's not unexpected when there are military tunnels under the cities. How else could they be eliminated? > this isn't even really a war on terror by the western mainstream's standards The western war on terror also had plenty of casualties.[0] [0] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_on_terror https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_on_terror
- lyu07282 4mo ago> That's not unexpected when there are military tunnels under the cities. How else could they be eliminated? Brilliant, any underground structure becomes a "terror tunnel", its wonderful you can level whole neighborhoods and afterwards claim it was justified because there were tunnels there. If that were true we would see gaps in the destruction in the satellite imagery wouldn't we? Or where they digging tunnels in grid patterns to every house in every neighborhood and under every street? What total moral bankruptcy to just blanked declare every civilian home and infrastructure as justifiable targets. Anyway if we want Israel talking points uncritically parroted we can just read literally any newspaper so spare us your breath.
- watwut 4mo agoThey leveled whole villages to ground and created "freely kill any citizen you see" zone. They made millions homeless. Like common.
- jameshilliard 4mo ago> They leveled whole villages to ground and created "freely kill any citizen you see" zone. That's a rather strange way of describing evacuation zones which Israel announces to reduce civilian casualties. > They made millions homeless. When one starts a war, loses and then refuses to surrender or negotiate a peace deal...that's not exactly surprising.
- intothemild 4mo ago> to reduce civilian casualties. I am in shock you wrote this.
- jameshilliard 4mo ago> I am in shock you wrote this. You're shocked I'm against killing civilians? Those who want civilian casualties are terrorist organizations like Hamas.[0] [0] https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/11/middleeast/sinwar-hamas-israel-ceasefire-hostage-talks-intl https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/11/middleeast/sinwar-hamas-israe...
- intothemild 4mo agoIt's that anyone who is keeping count can see that the amount of Palestinian civilians that have been killed in this war is a very very large number.
- jameshilliard 4mo ago> It's that anyone who is keeping count can see that the amount of Palestinian civilians that have been killed in this war is a very very large number. Civilian deaths are in line with what would be expected for urban warfare with the enemy hiding amongst the civilian population. Obviously creating civilian deaths is part of the Hamas strategy.
- ukblewis 4mo agoDisgusting that dehumanising Israelis has become a past time of people on this website. Having stared down Hezbollah flags in Israel’s north and having friends living on the border under constant fire many of whom have had damage to their homes, I have no confusion of who Hezbollah is. If you have any soul, how about you speak to the families of the half a million Syrians that Hezbollah helped Assad’s regime to murder? Or the Lebanese about the enormous 2020 port explosion?
- modo_mario 4mo agoHow did hezbollah come to exist in what was a christian nation not that long ago? How would it be erased and without a new one propping up right outside that exclusion zone?
- defrost 4mo ago> a christian nation not that long ago? Gosh .. Leaving aside a history of human occupation going back to 5,000 BC or so and looking just at more recent history, Lebanon came under Ottoman rule in the early 16th century and that "proto state" became a concentration area for Lebanese Maronite Christians who (IIRC) made up only 25% or so of the population. I think it would be better described as a nation with Christians (and other faiths) rather than as a purely Christian nation. There's also the post WWI Mandate for Syria and the Lebanon, administered by France, followed by the post WWII new Lebanese state that gained gained independence from Free France - that was a balancing act between multiple religious groups and also hardly a purely Christian nation. As to the question asked, Hezbollah was founded in 1982 directly as a result of the Israeli invasion of Lebanon. That's a very light on detail overview - it's just cans of worms all the way down.
- DanielHB 4mo agoI talked to a Lebanese born person once and apparently they have a parlament with reserved seats for each major religious group. Apparently that was the only way they managed to keep the country stable. But it is baffling to have religion so entrenched on the constitution.
- pugio 4mo agoI've always wondered what "illegal" means in this context? Is it designed to just be a pejorative, or something incendiary? When is an invasion "legal"? I can't really think of any case where any kind of recognized body of law (especially one that both constituents would recognize) would impose legality on an invasion, so it seems that people say "illegal" in much the same way that "legal" has become a stand-in in our society for "moral". Should I read it as "immoral invasion"? Leaving aside whether it is or isn't, at least that framing makes sense, because you can meaningfully debate the morality of an invasion, but I can't understand how you could debate legality (except perhaps within the country's own internal framework of laws, like if a president declared a war without going through the proper legal channels).
- impossiblefork 4mo agoAn invasion can be legal when authorized by the UNSC due to some crisis or when it's done in self-defence or to defend some other country. So examples of some illegal invasions: US invasion of Iraq, Russian invasion of Ukraine. Legal invasions (although illegalities were found afterwards, but much of the invasion was legal) are the invasion of Libya, probably the NATO invasion of Serbia depending on what actually happened (there are still some open questions-- it matters why people went in). Reasons to think the Israeli invasion of Lebanon is illegal are the mass-bulldosing of civilian buildings, destruction of farmland, some opinion articles about Lebanese territory being legitimately Israeli territory and an appropriate target for settlement etc. It shows a plan that is not primarily about self-defence.

- watwut 4mo agoThe kind of where there is no shooting going on? Or rather the usual kind where everybody shoots everybody and claims to be retaliating?
- gib444 4mo ago4 hours since posting. Any news of this being breached yet? I assume it was just another market manipulation play? And if it does hold, what is his next move to cause even more massive price shocks? They won't let prices revert to where they were - it's just normal now to have some shock event to raise prices
- specproc 4mo agoThere will be no peace till Bibi is dead or behind bars.
- l23k4 4mo agoIt would be a big mistake to assume that whoever succeeds Bibi will take a less aggressive stance than he has. Those hoping to replace him are mostly trying to one-up him.
- expedition32 4mo agoAt least Trump knew he fucked up and democracy forced him to make a deal. A certain leader in Moscow is still pretending everything is fine.
- Argonaut998 4mo agoThis is massively humiliating for Trump (and the US). None of the US' objectives were accomplished aside from "Iran never having a nuclear weapon" which was already established through the JCPOA, which Trump tore down and never ceased to remind everyone how terrible it was and how Obama was an abysmal negotiator. Which begs the question, why didn't Trump just try to recreate the JCPOA without going to war? Pride?
- adjejmxbdjdn 4mo agoAs far as I can tell they haven’t reached any agreement, never mind a JCPOA level one, on the nuclear issue, and only plan on discussing it over the next 2 months.
