- nearlyepic 5mo agoLawful doesn’t mean right. Slavery was lawful.
- charcircuit 5mo agoLaws are not immutable. Slavery is an example of something that was lawful and then society added rules against it.
- nearlyepic 5mo agoand your point is?
- charcircuit 5mo agoThat we operate as a society within the confines of the law. And the confines we exist in can be changed if the majority don't agree that something isn't right.
- estearum 5mo agoActually there are specific confines that cannot be changed by majority. Might I refer you to the US Constitution, which itself constrains which laws are flexible and which are not, and which this administration has run afoul of now on hundreds of occasions?
- int_19h 5mo agoIn US, the society didn't just "add rules against it". If you recall, the slavers first had to be beaten with a very big stick.
- whateveracct 5mo agosociety literally had to break down for years in order for us to add rules against it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Civil_War https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Civil_War
- charcircuit 5mo agoBefore the Civil War the majority of states had already banned the practice. It had to break down in order to be able to jam in an amendment to the constitution against it. States were already in the process of banning it themselves.
- whateveracct 5mo agobut were they _all_ doing it?
- yoyohello13 5mo agoI guess anything is ok… as long as it’s ‘lawful’. No government would ever make an unjust law.
- estearum 5mo agoYou realize that creating fear in the public, especially your political opposition (i.e. blue cities), using lawful or arguably-lawful means is absolutely a hallmark of fascism, correct?
- charcircuit 5mo agoI disagree. I think that is more of a hallmark of news media or influencer culture where irrational fears can be fanned and spread throughout a populace.
