> Russian nuclear doctrine would have treated that as an existential threat.
They claimed that with basically every little sprinkle of new aid for like two years, until everyone realized it was a bluff.
Putin is many things, but actively suicidal looks like a no.
- fsckboy 7mo agoRussian stated nuclear doctrine has been treated by the Russians as an existential threat to Russia if followed through on.
- varjag 7mo agoThen it's fine, as conventional bombing of Moscow is not an existential threat.
- kansface 7mo agoJust because he hasn’t pulled the trigger doesn’t mean there isn’t an actual red line.
- Sabinus 7mo agoThe red line is an invasion of Moscow or a strike on Russian nuclear capabilities. Everything else is just an order for preemptive suicide.
- nradov 7mo agoUkraine already executed a successful strike on Russian nuclear capabilities. In 2025 Operation “Spider’s Web” completely destroyed several irreplaceable nuclear-capable strategic bombers. https://www.csis.org/analysis/how-ukraines-spider-web-operation-redefines-asymmetric-warfare https://www.csis.org/analysis/how-ukraines-spider-web-operat... There is no "red line".
- 8note 7mo agothat didn't cross the red line, and the US has a phone call to talk it over and that Russia's policy for using nukes hadnt been breached
- ceejayoz 7mo agoRed lines have been crossed repeatedly. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_lines_in_the_Russo-Ukrainian_war#Russian_red_lines https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_lines_in_the_Russo-Ukraini...
- Sabinus 7mo agoThe red line attack on Russia's nuclear capabilities has to present a credible and deliberate threat to Russia's nuclear strike capacity. Operation spider web was attack on Russian airfields primarily to reduce capacity to bomb Ukraine. You can't nuke a country for hitting some nuclear strike capabilities you're using to conventionally bomb them.

- storus 7mo agoI suspect Israel and Russia are looking at each other with "You first!" so that they can start nuking and blame the other for starting it.
- red-iron-pine 7mo agoIsrael is not under existential threat even if there are occasional rockets hitting Ashkelon or downtown Tel Aviv The rest of the Arab world is mostly placated by alliances w/ the US and thus Israel, but if Israel drops an nuke all bets are off. The Saudis will probably have a bomb before too long following a nuclear deal: https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-removing-guardrails-proposed-saudi-nuclear-deal-document-says-2026-02-19/ https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-removing-guardrails-prop...
