Nvidia DLSS 5 Delivers AI-Powered Breakthrough in Visual Fidelity for Games
- ErneX 7mo agoDigital Foundry has a video about it: https://youtu.be/4ZlwTtgbgVA https://youtu.be/4ZlwTtgbgVA
- p_ing 7mo ago> The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered Interesting, given this game was shortly abandoned after release with major performance issues.
- ErneX 7mo agoI think they are just injecting the new DLSS on it, no changes from the developers. Edit: wrong, they are mentioned in the article and will support it themselves.
- batat 7mo agoSo far AI did a terrible job there: https://imgur.com/a/CJ7NU5w https://imgur.com/a/CJ7NU5w Original scene was far from perfect, but it was somewhat more consistent: a sunny spring day, warm tones, noon, some sun rays casting deep shadows on the face (traditionally the worst time for outdoor portrait photography, hehe). With "DLSS ON" it's something like an overcast sky; there are some flat shadows on the building in the background but the shadows on the building on the right are still just as sharp as before; the overall tone of the scene became colder; sun rays on clothes disappeared but there still deep shadows on man's face as if the sun was still shining from above, and the tone of his face is basically the same, despite the new color balance.
- cubefox 7mo agoIn the original the man has a large sun shadow (from an off screen object) on the right side of the face. This is gone with DLSS 5, making the face no longer look lit mainly from the left. Only self-shadowing remains. It seems DLSS 5 is working with screen space information only, which means it doesn't know the position of any off-screen lights, which in turn seems to bias it toward an overcast sky look with omnidirectional light and without sharp sun shadows.
- dandellion 7mo agoI really don't like how it changes the face of the girl and looks like someone different or like they had a bad plastic surgery. The other characters also slip into uncanny territory.
- Hamuko 7mo agoYeah, the fact that she looks like she's been ran through a prompt "make her look hotter" is a major turn-off. Feels like I'm being sold real-time AIslop. I'd always turn this feature off based on this demo. Can't imagine that the artists behind these games are particularly happy about Nvidia changing their designs this much either.
- nhinck2 7mo agoAlso taking a dirty foggy environment and sanitising it.
- Daz912 7mo ago>changes the face of the girl like literally every remake does when the graphics are upgraded?
- Paratoner 7mo agowhat does that even mean? Remakes have artists working with original creators to remodel characters in a way that keeps the original art's spirit, failing which they do get the backlash they deserve. This prnified AI filter "touch-up" is not the upgrade you AI evangelists think it is. But keep it coming, I'm sure once we've burned through enough forests we'll reach the desired outcomes.
- hatingisok 7mo agoI hope this will work on NES emulators.
- archagon 7mo agohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9wp6cz0A1o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9wp6cz0A1o
- hmry 7mo agoThe demo video (https://x.com/NVIDIAGeForce/status/2033617732147810782 https://x.com/NVIDIAGeForce/status/2033617732147810782) is even less appealing than the screenshot. The old woman at 00:20 especially looks awful! This has all the worst aspects of AI-generated faces. Unfitting high contrast lighting that doesn't match the environment, shiny plastic-looking skin, and only barely resembling the original likeness. It's like an Instagram yassification beauty filter. I'll be honest, I don't know enough to judge whether it's impressive that they can generate these kinds of faces (that were state-of-the-art two years ago?) in real time now, on an $8000 dual-GPU prosumer desktop. But artistically, it serves less as an ad and more as a warning to stay away from this tech. I'm surprised someone thought this was a good showcase.
- gdulli 7mo agoThe uncanny valley remains undefeated.
- radium3d 7mo agoThe biggest problem I have with DLSS 5 is how it completely upends and ruins the dynamic lighting that the developers spend a huge amount of time perfecting to set the perfect mood for the scene.
- Daz912 7mo agoIt's not even out yet.
- Lapra 7mo agoHorrific. Completely ruins the art direction.
- fidotron 7mo ago[flagged]
- user34283 7mo agoI was particularly impressed by the Starfield footage, I like the more realistic look. I'm curious to see more.
- rjh29 7mo agoIf they manage to make it truly artist-directed and subtle, then I'm sure people won't have an issue with it. It's more efficient than raytracing for sure. As it stands, it's horrible and the reaction has been rightly negative.
- archagon 7mo agoBro, not everything is about "cope" or whatever weird ideological battle you're playing out in your head.
- archagon 7mo agoNot sure why anyone would want this, either on the consumer or producer side. (Unless it's Madden or something.) If this supplants prior versions of DLSS — which magically doubles perf while maintaining visual quality — it would be a tragedy.
- b__d 7mo agoIt's a tech demo. Let us treat it as one. For faces, skin, and hair (so everything human) I personally dislike the direction. But for environment, props, and especially lighting, it's quite nice!
- cubefox 7mo agoIt has a tendency to brighten the shadows and the scene as a whole. Particularly noticable on Assassin's Creed Shadows (ironically, given the name). In that game it also removes a lot of the fog. I think that's more an issue with their AI model though and could be fixed in the future with a different model. Some diffusion models have a similar fake brightness / studio lighting issue, e.g. Imagen 4, others don't (Imagen 3).
- gonlad_x 7mo agototally agree
- zeratax 7mo agoI've only so far seen the re9 comparisons and imo it's awful there. lots of colored light transfer is suddenly gone, post processing effects like bloom on street lights is also gone and in general it just looks flat to me now
- sph 7mo agoThe best thing about DLSS 5 are the memes on Reddit. AI-powered yassifier filter. Truly a product of our times.
- general_reveal 7mo agoIt’s shocking how spoiled everyone is. They are literally upgrading graphics by a generation with software. We’re pretty much one more iteration away from photo real AI generated frame. Woah. We are spoiled out of our mind.

- Paratoner 7mo agoI hope we take a moment in the future to dissect the fascinating minds of AI tech bros, who have no clue what the heck they are talking about. You see a clear last gen AI yassifier that screws lighting in scenes and looks horrid in motion, and your prn-addeled brain thinks: "GENERATIONAL LEAP! LET THE GOON GAMES BEGIN!" In a way I pray for the coming end.
- general_reveal 7mo agoAre we watching the same videos? https://youtu.be/LHp9QDIwLZk https://youtu.be/LHp9QDIwLZk What are you watching exactly?
- Paratoner 7mo agoI am watching the same videos. I simply fundamentally disagree with the premise that "studio lighting everywhere" = better and photo-realistic. But besides all of that, most video games do not actually go for photo-realism as an artistic direction, they bake their lighting in certain ways, intentionally add shadow to create ambience, plus 10000 other things I am unqualified to discuss here. But again, feel free to enjoy what the AI sloppinators are offering, you are on the winning side of that battle as far as investments and bubble-making goes. I simply gave my view on it and regret the direction we are collectively taking, willingly or kicking and screaming towards infinite dogshit.

- haritha-j 7mo agoThe point isn't what this does to existing games. The bigger point to me is what it'll do to games of the future. I imagine in the future devs wont bother creating detailed faces anymore. instead make a very generic thing that the AI is good at upsacling and call it a day. Once you turn DLSS on, it'll start looking like real faces. It's a really good way to save some cash.
