    Pi-hole operates on your local network. NextDNS performs the same thing but on the public internet, removing the dependency on a VPN to the private local network.

Pi-hole has served me well enough over the years, haven't felt the need to look at other options.

    Couldn't tell you, since I never used any other options. I started at pi-hole and never had a reason to look for alternatives.

I love NextDNS (https://nextdns.io https://nextdns.io) and I've been paying for it for many years. My only complaint is that on macOS, I cannot automatically turn the service off on certain wifi networks. This feature exists on the iOS app but is strangely missing on the macOS app.

  +1 for NextDNS. Been a happy user for a few years now and introduced many non-tech friends/family into the world of 99% advert-free internet.

  +1 I love the parental controls I can limit social media to only a few hours a day ( only on my phone profile) And it has good Tailscale integration!

Local DNS server with a script that updates the bllacklist is enough for me. In the past it was DNSCrypt now it’s unbound.

I am happy user of controld.com which offers category filtering and analytics. I started using it because I wanted a portable solution which worked out the box for Linux, Android, Windows, Ios. For my family, I have two profiles, one for kids and one for adults. At work, a simple profile works for everyone. Changes are updated in a few seconds, and category filtering works almost perfectly (a few websites over the years were miscategorised, but it's pretty rare, and very easy to override).
