For a Linux user, you can already build such a system yourself quite trivially by getting an FTP account, mounting it locally with curlftpfs, and then using SVN or CVS on the mounted filesystem. From Windows or Mac, this FTP account could be accessed through built-in software.
- karolist 9mo agoSir, this is a Docker, not Dropbox
- aruggirello 9mo agoI'm replacing Dropbox with Unison [0] over ssh, BTW. It's a great piece of software (multiplatform, and it even has a GUI). [0] https://github.com/bcpierce00/unison https://github.com/bcpierce00/unison
- prima-facie 9mo agoI'm so surprised to see that folks rediscover Unison in 2026 :) It is a unique piece of software which has been around for 20 years or so. The two way sync is great but also a bit scary since it can wipe files. BTW, Rclone has bisync now.
- ChocolateGod 9mo agoIt's not the 90s anymore.
- metaltyphoon 9mo agoIt that comment says is “I don’t know what docker solves”
- karolist 9mo agoit's a parody of the infamous https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9224 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9224
- ahepp 9mo agoI mean, isn't that just about what happened to Docker? They wrote a really nice wrapper around cgroups/ns/tarball hosting and then struggled to monetize it because a large portion of their users are exactly the kind of people who could set up a curlftpfs document cloud.
