Ask HN: Why no dark mode?
Why isn't there a dark mode in HN?
- KomoD 9mo agoDang was willing to add it at one point, not sure what happened though. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23199062 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23199062 I'd recommend just using dark reader or writing a simple user-script
- immibis 9mo agoDark mode is for people who have their monitor brightness set way too high. I'm serious - try it. Only issue is that some monitors' dimmest setting is still too bright. You could also get a user-styles extension.
- runjake 9mo agoDark mode is for people who prefer dark mode. Yes, the science seems to indicate that light mode is generally more readable, personal preference be damned. I'm generally a light mode person, despite growing up on "dark mode" (AKA 8 and 16-bit home computers and DEC VT terminals). But, for whatever reason I have to code in a window that is set to dark mode.
- lejeanvaljean 9mo agoI know that there are probably extensions etc but I'm in my bedroom now and the room is not lit like an office and the site is really bright :) For us "geeks", although I appreciate the minimalism, I'm sure that we enjoy dark theme everywhere.
- JohnFen 9mo ago> I'm sure that we enjoy dark theme everywhere. Not all of us. I have a fairly strong dislike of dark mode/themes. However, I certainly wouldn't be upset if there was an option for one on HN, as long as I didn't have to use it.
- immibis 9mo ago> and the room is not lit like an office and the site is really bright :) so turn the brightness down
- Davidbrcz 9mo agoI'm visually impaired: dark mode is about making the web usable for me https://drgrizz.xyz/dark-mode.html https://drgrizz.xyz/dark-mode.html

- reliefcrew 9mo agoOne of my favorite Show HN: HN dark mode in 2 lines of code... https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32719488 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32719488 It also solves the "Why no light mode?" problem ;-)
