  I'm Indian -- I think a lot of this comes from the fact that the Brits left such a horrible legal system behind that it's hard to trust it to resolve disputes well. So people default to family/community trust relations. I've been lucky to work in high-quality teams where nepotism hasn't been a concern, but I do understand where it's coming from (bad as it is).
