I think it's a good plan, though there might be some pain.
I have a bog standard AMD graphics card that does not work in Linux. I've tried multiple distributions and version in those distributions and both the Linux and AMD drivers. It just randomly flashes. Where do I go to get help? Who knows?
- trenchpilgrim 1y agoWhat card is it? If it's older than Volcanic Islands (2015), yeah, those old cards aren't well supported by the current amdgpu driver, so you'd need to use a distribution that still supports the old ati driver. The linked article recommends MX Linux for old machines. I think you can get it working with Arch Linux but that would require a higher level of effort.
- apple4ever 1y agoI got it last year. It's a Radeon RX 6600.
- trinsic2 1y agoupgrade your graphics card or try another? is it old with limited support? I hear you though, I still have printing problems with my Epson WF printer.
- apple4ever 1y agoI just got it last year! Should totally still be supported.
- heavyset_go 1y agoI wouldn't expect users to do this, but have you filed a bug on kernel.org for the amdgpu driver? AMD's kernel developers are incredibly responsive there, I've worked with them to fix a bunch of bugs I've run into.
- apple4ever 1y agoI have not. I wasn't sure where to go. Thanks I'll try that.
- d3Xt3r 1y agoTry the forums or Discord chat for the distro you're trying. LinuxQuestions.org and the "Linux for All" discord are good places to ask distro-agnostic questions.
- mixmastamyk 1y agoThis happened with a new AMD chipset with a Framework. One firmware update improved it and then kernel 6.8? I think fixed it. Was about perfect, then kernel 6.13 AMD driver broke it again. ;-)
- mixmastamyk 1y agoI've since learned that 6.13+ has a different brightness scale. Adjust to that and things should work well.
- amatecha 1y agoI'd be curious how well it runs NetBSD or OpenBSD.. have you checked?
- apple4ever 1y agoHmmm that's a good point. I have not tried that!
- unixhero 1y agoYes low end chips that no one bothered to write drivers for has issues
- account42 1y agoSounds fishy. What card is this?
- apple4ever 1y agoIts a Radeon RX 6600
- npteljes 1y agoWhere would you get help with Microsoft Windows? Same support story as Linux, in my experience. If it's a PC, I'd consider selling the card and getting a different one that looks good from a cursory research, if it's a laptop, similar story, but I'd get a 2-3 year old one so that the drivers etc situation is sorted.
