It's all a distraction. Get everyone riled up about free guv bux and not address the high cost of tuition or the loopholes that let us companies skip debt-laden grads for foreign labor.
- vkou 1y ago> or the loopholes that let us companies skip debt-laden grads for foreign labor. Note that as we speak, AI is replacing junior roles and c-suites are bragging about doing layoffs because of it. There are zero restrictions to it's use in the workplace, and it will only get better at taking your work, year over year, while paying zero taxes. You're being distracted by anxiety over immigrants, whose entry is limited, and who, well, do pay taxes.
- gosub100 1y agoBring up AI too. Where are the Dems with their new tax? Let's tax AI and use it to pay grads' student loans off. I don't have anxiety about immigrants but my work looks like India, it's not diverse. The company clearly doesn't want Americans working there
- JumpCrisscross 1y ago> Let's tax AI and use it to pay grads' student loans off Using non-college grads’ taxes to pay off college graduates’ loans is why we lose elections.
- vkou 1y agoWhile I certainly have a better idea of where that money should go, I'm not sure payroll-taxing corporations employing AI for the purpose of shrinking their white-collar payroll... is morally equivalent to the myth of Joe the Plumber paying for Frida's degree in underwater basket-weaving.
- JumpCrisscross 1y agoMoral equivalence is irrelevant. Nobody likes their taxes benefiting people more fortunate than themselves. And the college/non-college divide is politically active at the moment.
- vkou 1y agoAgain, I'm not sure how such a tax on AI could possibly be felt by a non-college educated person to be a tax that 'they' are paying. The non-college educated aren't employing LLMs, or people to work with LLMs.
- kasey_junk 1y agoMoney is fungible, if you tax x to pay for y, you could have taxed z less or paid for w. And giving a giant regressive tax break to college loan holders was literally one of the things that lost Biden the election.
- vkou 1y agoYou're conveniently ignoring Kamala's plan to raise taxes on corporations (which turned tech and big business fully against the Dems), and Trump's plan to raise taxes (tariffs) on consumers, and give a massive tax gift to the wealthy in the BBB. While cutting benefits. If you're expecting progressive taxation from MAGA, or blue collar Republicans to vote for their self-interest, you'll be waiting a while.
- kasey_junk 1y agoI’m not waiting for progressive taxes or forgetting anything. I’m addressing your point on how people can “feel” like they are paying a tax unrelated to them. We are in the grievance era. People view any spending that goes to an “other” as a wealth transfer from them to that other (even while most of maga don’t pay any federal tax!) so if you pick an other to support it shouldn’t be one as unsympathetic as white collar workers.
- vkou 1y ago> use it to pay grads' student loans off I'm more of a mind to just take that money and funnel it straight into unemployment coffers.
