- palmfacehn 1y agoIt is hard to know. Amorous gifts aren't uncommon, especially for those with the means. If it were done as tactlessly as your headline suggests, that would be problematic. However, as Musk is a partisan figure, I have a hard time accepting it at face value. Several additional layers of interpretation and incentives are between us and the actual event. People of all classes do boorish things regularly. Bringing it up as some kind of gotcha is illustrative of my larger point.
- imtringued 1y agoBillionaire POV: You are one of the most influential humans on the planet. You think to yourself that you are a pretty chill guy and that you haven't wronged anybody directly other than the employees and executives you've shouted at or even fired, but you had very good reasons for doing so. You've tried your best and as proof of being a good person, you've been rewarded with tremendous wealth, but for some reason society is getting worse and this is getting in the way of obtaining more proof of how good of a person you are. People start to despise you, even though you know that you did nothing to earn their contempt. Why can't they see how good of a person you are? You're practically Jesus Christ himself, bestowing miracles upon earth!
- danparsonson 1y agoEmpathy! No-one acquires and retains that level of wealth without doing terrible things. Prove me wrong; I'll wait. In the mean time forgive me while I don't shed any tears for the poor demonised out-group consisting of Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, etc.
- palmfacehn 1y agoI'm sure those individuals will be fine without your pity. The point remains. You'll have a harder time understanding their motives if you start with demonization. "Well, he's a member of the naughty class so his behavior is by definition incomprehensible. No further examination is required." vs. genuine curiosity about what drives an individual's behavior. That isn't to say that I enjoy everything they've done. One of the big asks and core areas of empathy is to be understanding of other's faults. Sometimes recognizing our own is a good first step.
